Post subject:  Running a network frontend from the CD

I've been running successful 'self-contained' versions of R5A16 and R5A22. I have a home eithernet but hadn't tried Myth on the network before. Comment if my assumptions are correct.

A frontend computer running from the CD doesn't need a TV card in... the TV card just feeds the backend functions (Assuming you aren't trying to output to a TV & are using the computer's monitor)

an A16 backend needs to run with an A16 CD on the other machine, and an A22 with an A22, they won't talk to each other ?

Thanks

Correct, a frontend-only computer doesn't need a TV tuner. It connects to the backend and uses its tuners (for live TV) or plays a recording.

Outputting to a TV with the frontend computer only requires a video card with TV-out capability, again, not a tuner card.

The frontend and backend have to be using the same database "schema" in order to talk to each other. This has more to do with the version of MythTV that both ends are using than the version of KnoppMyth. So you could be running some hypothetical version of KnoppMyth on the backend and a different hypothetical version on the frontend, and as long as they're both running the same version of MythTV, they should talk.

But having said that, yes, since A16 and A22 are using two different schemas, they won't talk to each other, so you have to run two A16s or two A22s.

Hi snaproll,

May want to check out Xsecret's wiki for some "pre set" things that need to be done first. It is quite easy and works nicely however, I've only run it as a live cd frontend.

Thanks Mike,
I got the wiki page printed out to use as my guide.
Will be my first shot at trying to send video over my intranet.
Glad to hear it works out easily.
I may experiment with A26 as a front end with A16, I know A22 doesn't net well with anything but itself. I can run A16 with A16 if need be...

Hi snaproll,

You can't mix and match. Use A16 with A16 and A26 with A26.

Hi Mike !

I have CDs of all flavors, but installs only of A22 & A16.

I thought networking-wise A22 was odd man out and A26 was a shot at re-imposing commonality ?

Hi snaproll,

I don't know about the odd man out but you can't mix versions simply because of the database connection. There have been some little changes as KnoppMyth grows which come from Mythtv.org. They maybe both square pegs, however they are not the same square. Cesman would have to give details beyond this. Basicly, if you want it to work, don't mix versions.

A26 may bring things back to common track which is not a bad thing. It upgrades A16 very nicely and installs smoothly as well. Nor does it require much for tweaks.
