I have lots of archived dvd images in .iso format. Some of them play, others dont in mythtv. The ones that dont play, play just fine on my pc using vlc. Any idea why this is happening?

Have a look at this program on your windoze box and look at the iso files. Now I had a copy of iso files and found that there was a difference, although I have never actually tried to play them with MythTV.

I went ahead and installed vlc client on linux too, since its my default player in windows, and it plays everything just fine.
