Post subject:  [Help] /video folder not recognizing contained files

I looked around on the forum for this but couldn't find a similar post.

I just installed KnoppMyth R5A30.1 and I am trying to transfer some of my movies from my PC to my myth box. I was able to connect to my myth box using winSCP.

Going off the file system layout I transferred 1 image, 1 mp3, and 1 mpg file to their appropriate directories. When I went to my mythtv box, I was able to play the mp3 and view the picture I sent over. However, I am unable to view the video I transferred over. When I open up 'Watch Videos', all I get is /video in the upper left corner of the screen and up and down arrows on the right-hand side.

It acts like there is no file in that directory. I thought maybe there was an issue with the file format not being supported, so I added a 2nd file. This time i sent over an avi file. Neither file shows up.

Since the mp3 and image worked fine, I wonder if I am doing something wrong.

Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

go into setup->video manager and the directory will be re-scanned and the files will be added to the database. You will then be able to see them in Watch Videos.

Post subject:  Subdirectory question

On a PC, I created many ISO files, to back up my DVD collection. I moved these ISO files from an external USB drive to a myth/video subdirectory (myth/video/dvdbackup). None of the ISO's in myth/video/dvdbackup are shown in Watch Videos. I have gone to the video manager and it appears to take a moment to re-scan. However, still no luck.

Question: If ISO files within a /video subdirectory do not show up in Watch Videos, is this a permissions issue?

(I have ripped some ISO's using mythburn into myth/video. Those videos play just fine in Watch Videos.)

Answered my own question. I did a chmod 777 to each subdirectory folder. Now, everything shows up. Perhaps this will help someone else, down the road. ***do not do this, see posts below***

You should be able to just set the directories chmod u=rwx,go=rx, and the files chmod u=rw,go=r. Please don't do the a+rwx thing when it's not absolutely necessary or suggest it to others. It's a really, really ugly meme. :(

Hi,
I usually just change the ownership to mythtv.

# chown mythtv:mythtv /myth/________/* to hit all the files

mythtv needs the permissions, not the whole world.

That's even better. It's always a good idea to get the right ownerships and permissions to keep things running smoothly.

tjc & mjl, thanks for setting me on the right path regarding proper permissions. I have edited my previous post.
