I have a bttv card and I get a fine picture, but I only get sound in LiveTV after changing the channel and consequently no sound in recordings. I have the bttv lineout going into the mic for a sound card (/dev/dsp, not the primary sound card that goes to the TV which is /dev/dsp1). The bttv card is my second tuner, the other is a PVR350 which works fine sound and all so I know the sound issue is not from PC->TV. I know the sound is always coming out of the video card line out since I can wire the line out to the line in of the primary sound card and get audio on the TV, regardless of if it's watching tv or not.

So, why would I only get sound from the card after a channel change? I've tried setting it to pretune to channel 3 in mythtv-setup. And sometimes if I look at the settings in mythtv-setup and alsamixer it will work. I don't have to actually change anything, just viewing them in the right order at the right time seems to make it work sometimes. Also, toggling the 'Do not adjust sound' option will sometimes make it start working without changing the channel (and thus recordings will work). But this doesn't make sound work consistantly with the setting on or off and it won't work after a reboot or is it reproducable.

I have tried with the mic starting out muted/unmuted. This is fine for LiveTV, but I never watch LiveTV, I just use the machine for recordings which does not work. Even after changing the channel in LiveTV and then recording, no sound will be in the recording.

This used to work fine under knoppmyth, but I recently migrated my setup (recordings, database, etc) to a mandriva 2005 install and this is the last remaining issue.

I'm using the mythtv-0.18.1-20050618.4.1.102plf.rpm from plf. I may have to do an upgrade to 2006 since they have the 0.18.2 rpms which may fix this issue.

Would it help if I mentioned that I've been fighting this problem for 5 days now and my wife has threatened to break my fingers if I don't stop wasting time trying to get this to work and start getting results?

I had a similar problem with my bttv card. The solution for me was to change the options bttv card=nn parameter. I had it set to 72 when it should have been 70

These may not be the right numbers for you, but it may be worth playing with your card and tuner parameters.

That didn't quite work. Changing the card=72 to card=70 just made it have no sound at all and no longer able to change channels. I tried playing with the card= to several other values and the tuner= with no luck.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

What is your bttv card? Its a little hard for anyone to help unless you tell us at least that much.

It is a PROLINK PixelView PlayTV MPEG 2(PV-M4900 FM.RC) PCI Interface TV/FM Tuner, MPEG2 TV Capture Card, but I never got the MPEG2 part to work, oh well.

My relevent lines from modprobe.conf are:
Code:
options bttv card=72 tuner=9
options tuner addr=0x61 force=0x61 ignore=0x60

These are the options that worked in the old install. The options tuner is needed for getting the channel changes to work (not sure why, dmesg says it detects the tuner at 0xc2 and 0xc0 depending on what I use for card= on bttv), but I haven't tried different addresses for the tuner section. I also am using a 2.6.10 kernel with bttv drivers 0.9.15 if that helps.

If you need anymore info, let me know.

Thanks for all the help, I finally twiddled the right settings and it working with:
Code:
options bttv card=37 tuner=43

It turns out I didn't need the options tuner line after all. I just needed to be pointed in the right direction, so now I should be all set.

Thanks again!
