Post subject: | Decreasing Boot Time |
Does anyone have any recommendations for decreasing the boot time? Right now, my box (P4-1700 MHz) is taking 3+ minutes to load. Is it possible to recompile the kernel, and turn off some of the modules I don't use so that the computer doesn't waste time probing for them? Jason |

It's all modules, and it generally doesn't load what it doesn't need. Most of the time is spent probing hardware and that's a lot harder to trim. |

True. But suppose, for example, I disabled USB (and serial, and parallel support) in the kernel. Wouldn't the boot be faster if we told the kernel not to probe at all for it? Jason |

I think this has been covered a long time ago. Basically, the fastest boot time you will get is from building a monolithic kernel with all the modules that you use built in. This way there is very little (or no) probing and your box will get on with its business. |
