Here's my hardware configuration:

Thunderbird 750mhz
512 megs PC133 ram
40gig (for the time being) 7200 RPM HD
PVR 250
Geforce2 MX 32meg w/tv out
Mobo: Not sure ATM, but am using onboard audio


After a bit of work (mostly missing something stupid on my part) I got KnoppMyth running and displaying on my TV...good to go. However, when I go to "Watch TV" the picture comes up for about 5 to 10 seconds and then the entire system hangs. This whole time I get no audio however audio does work when using, say, zsnes.

I suspect the lack of audio may be the issue after reading here:

However it says the instructions in there aren't for the PVR 250.

I'm going to try those instructions when i get home today and have a chance to work on it, but until then, does KnoppMyth require that? KnoppMyth seems to support everything else about/for the PVR 250 out of the box so if I had to guess I'd say that isn't my problem as it's probably already done.

Another question, is /dev/dsp the correct audio device I should be pointing to?

And one more...is it likely that the lack of audio is causing my hangups or does someone know if it's more likely to be something else?

Think I may have (hopefully) found my solution....but no one reported hangs in this thread so I don't know if it is the same as my problem or not..

is what I'm going to try first (which is essentially what the link I pointed to says) .....hopefully it will solve my problem (as the docs do say MythTV will appear to hang when it's looking for sound)....my whole box hangs though...SSH is unresponsive and won't respond to pings. CTRL+ALT+BKSPC == nada.

I'll see later today...any suggestions in the meantime would be nice.

i had the exact problem (tv would work ~4 to 6 seconds and freeze).. It kicked my butt all weekend.. even after a fresh install. Finaly i went into my bios and loaded failsafe defualts. My tv worked flawlessly. I have yet to spend the time to figure out what option in there did it, i imagine it is one of the AGP options. But i would give it a try, it fixed all my problems.

No, KnoppMyth R4V4.1 is somewhat borked when it comes to 250/350 support. There's some futzing needed to make it work.

Do everything up to, but not including, the part about "getting TV-out to work". Note that, if you scrutinize dmesg closely, you will see an ivtv-fb error message; this is harmless, and can be eliminated by not using the line (this is described in the above thread):


(The error is occurring because the 250 doesn't have a framebuffer, only the 350.)

if all that fails and you still get hard locks considering the age of your processor you may want to search on pvr250 via dma issue. Unfortunately there is no workaround.
