Shouldn't be too hard, been messing with Xorg for ages, can get it to do most things I want. Even getting an old IBM S50 (mem shared intel onboard) to output 1680x1050 for our wall monitor at work (we use Nagios to monitor our network).
Took a bit of tweaking to get the FX5500 to output 1920x1200 as it was, didn't seem to want to output anything over 1680x1050.

Well found this:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Mo ... r_ModePool
So added:
Modes "1920x1080_60" "1280x720_60" "720x480_60"
Re-reading the specs the panel says it is non-interlaced, so I'm figuring maybe interlacing may be the problem.
This is the output I got from the Xorg log file:
Code: (**) NVIDIA(0): Use of AGPGART requested (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce FX 5500 at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0) (--) NVIDIA(0): Memory: 262144 kBytes (--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 04.34.20.87.00 (--) NVIDIA(0): Interlaced video modes are supported on this GPU (--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce FX 5500 at PCI:1:0:0: (--) NVIDIA(0): ViewSonic VX2835wm (DFP-0) (--) NVIDIA(0): ViewSonic VX2835wm (DFP-0): 135.0 MHz maximum pixel clock (--) NVIDIA(0): ViewSonic VX2835wm (DFP-0): Internal Single Link TMDS (II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Validation Overrides for ViewSonic VX2835wm (DFP-0): (II) NVIDIA(0): NoMaxPClkCheck (II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: DFP-0 (II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes: (II) NVIDIA(0): "1920x1080_60" (II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x720_60" (II) NVIDIA(0): "720x480_60" (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1920 x 1080 (--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (82, 74); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config (--) NVIDIA(0): option (--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp (II) do I need RAC? No, I don't.
And it appears ok on VNC, so I'll guess I'll have to wait till I get home to see if it made a difference to the playback.

........YAY!
As I sit here, 50% cpu load on a P4 2.4C... Silky Smooth HD! (Granted with XvMC)
Thankyou Mike for helping me think outside the box
Further to this, tried 1920x1200_60 and the lines came back. Curious to know why it happens, but the care factor isn't high enough to worry about it any further!
PS. Nathan, should see my Xorg config for my notebook, dual screen, seperate x sessions, 3D acceleration (on primary screen only, crappy shared mem intels!). Had Beryl working on the primary screen on Ubuntu 7.04, gunna work out how to repeat that with Compiz when I get some spare time! Also there is talk around the place on ways to get it working on both, but I'm not preparred to make those sacrifices on my workstation!

excellent news... congrats...
thats the interesting thing about this hombrew pvr stuff, when you get through an issue, you always push that extra bit further... most of the time i go backwards first (a long way) before i go forward... but it's all good stuff to investigate... the wife doesnt think so though

Yeah, the benefits of OSS
I have my old working install still on the old hard drive, so at a pinch I could shove the drive in and have things running in minutes if I really screwed up, keeps the GF happy

without trying to hijack the thread, did you find a post/wiki that described completely the best way to turn XvMC on? I dont have it on, but i think i should get moving in that direction with the HD stuff emerging in our little town.

It's just Under -> utilities/setup -> setup -> tv settings -> playback, then change the preferred MPEG2 Decoder to Standard XvMC.
People have had varied results with it, but for me it works great! The OSD will be grayscale if it is working and there is a solution for people with 5 series nVidia cards to get it to display in colour. Which is on my todo list, along with tweaking my surround sound

Shouldn't be, long as your nVidia drivers are working.
