Since the PVR 350 has a hardware decoder and encoder, while the PVR 250 has only the encoder doesn't it make sense that when adding a tuner that this would be the preferred way (assuming a stand-alone box performing backend/frontend duties on it's own)? Thus using the 350 for in and out while using the 250 for in only?

Is anyone doing this with success? I am looking toward the future and could see me adding a tuner.

Makes sense if you are using the 350's TV out.
