I'm recording my remaining pre-recorded video tapes as per spa|V|'s suggestion here so I can place these tapes in storage, until I find a DVD version to replace them.
Anyway, I've found that on some of them, the PVR350 seems to lock up, resulting in either 0 file length files and the card not being able to be used for further recordings until a reboot.
Output from mythbackend.log from one of these failures:

It seems to work well on other tapes and from my Cable STB, it just that certain ones seem to upset the card.

For info, the ivtv section from dmesg is as follows:

My KM is a vanilla R5D1.
I'm just mentioning this as something like this may be happening to other PVRx50 users, resulting in 0 length recordings and card lockups.

Try upgrading to the latest ivtv driver (0.7.2). There are detailed directions on the wiki. Don't let the level of detail scare you, you can literally cut and paste the commands from there into your shell session and have the whole job done in ~5 minutes. It's easy, it'll fix other known issues, and it may help with this. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CompileIvtv

Thanks tjc for the info, followed the info on the wiki unfortunately it still seems to be doing the same thing :

ETA: tried doing another recording, no apparent recording made (no preview, HDD LED not flashing) so I stop the tape, suddenly the HDD LED starts flashing and go I back to the "Watch Recordings" it starts to play the RF channel which the VCR is tuned to.
I'm wondering if it's something to do with dodgy syncs from the VCR so the card is not able to lock on properly, causing the card to lock up.

Just a further update, when watching a couple of recordings from tape that there appears to be a "skip" in the recording, occasionaly, a few lines worth disappearing, it's like if was cut out.
This seems to back up what I was seeing earlier with the problem recordings. It seems to rely on a fairly accurate sync signal, if it doesn't receive this, the converter chip seems to pause and restarts when a better sync is received.

I have a similar problem which I just experienced after upgrading to ivtv 0.7.3 a week ago.

The picture completely freezes for absolutely no reason during playback of a previously recorded video.

My "ho hum" log output is as follows:
2006-12-28 20:20:56.595 AutoExpire: SendDeleteMessages. Nothing to expire.
2006-12-28 20:20:56.610 AutoExpire: Checking episode count for each recording profile using max episodes

Any clues to resolving this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Abby

I have been having the DMA errors too. It causes my pvr-350's hardware playback to stop working. The only fix I have found so far is a reboot.

Just for the record, I am running R5A30.2 (and have been since Feb 2006) with excellent results from a PVR350 using Dragon hardware.
