I have been using knoppmyth for more than a year with my PVR350 but I have never gotten the PVR500 to give me anything but snow.

Try the following:

- Remove any "options ivtv tuner=" line from /etc/modprobe.conf where I suspect that your forcing it to type 50.

- Get into mythtv-setup and follow the walk through that's now the second major item in the outline here - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenWatchingTV (BTW - This got a major overhaul recently. If you haven't see it lately, you haven't seen it.) You should have 3 cards defined /dev/video0, /dev/video1, /dev/video2, all of type "MPEG-2 encoder card", and they should be autoprobed/recognized succesfully. The Input Connections for each of those carrds should use the default frequency set (from General page 3) and the same Video Source.

- Make sure you reboot so that the modprobe options change takes effect.

- Swap cable feeds at the back of the cartds with the PVR-350. This should help eliminate most cabling worries.

If you're still seeing snow after that you may have a bad card.

Didn't find anything in /etc/modprobe that was setting type. I did go into /etc/mythtv/module/ivtv and change the type from 50 to 70 for the second two tuners. After a reboot and cable swap,
!EVERYTHING WORKS!

That's a good thing, and you must have a 4 leaf clover in your pocket. Lots of folks have serious problems with those Samsung tuners. I should have noticed those earlier...

BTW - What version of KnoppMyth are you running? I saw the 0.8.2 driver and assumed R5E50.

Search for an older posting by me that talks about "change_tuner0.sh" and "delayed_settings.sh".

I'm new to Myth/Knopp and am doing a fresh install of R5E50...

I have a PVR-500 in a Shuttle SN95G5.

I've got it dual-booting Windows MCE2005 and R5E50.

The PVR-500 is crystal clear in Windows, however in R5E50, it is "fuzzy". Not, terrible, but not clear. It's not fuzzy like if I set it to the wrong cable frequency. It's like the MPEG decoder is set too low or something....

I've checked everything I can think of and can't get it to look good.

Well I had some success with this parm. Not 100% but better.

I knew about the 720 x 480 settings in MythTV.

The v4l2-ctl -c temporal_filter=8 -d command is something I haven't found before.

It definately made a difference. It still isn't as good as when I boot into Windows but....

Windows produces a softer image overall but no background fuzzyness. Linux is sharper, yet still has the background fuzzyness...

The fuzzyness I'm seeing in Linux is like a background noise issue. It looks like a chainlink fence moving around or vertical waves is the best I can describe it.

the v4l2-ctl temporal_filter setting helps but doesn't eliminate it for me. Setting it too high makes me feel like I'm back in the 60's and on some good drugs!

This is good though, at least it's much more watchable now.....

There are any number of other filtering options you can use, but we'll have to refer you to the ivtv and v4l2 wikis for what to try.

I've done a reboot and re-tested with the parm change and it seems "good enough".

Is there a place on the How-To or Wiki to put this? There is definately a great number of these threads floating around....

Start on the TroubleShooting page and if you don't find one that you think matches (Say PictureQualityIssues) then add a new one. I'd recommend using the diagnostic/fix format that most of those pages are written in.
