Now that I have everything up and running (except LIRC, but that's a future project) I will concentrate on capture-issue which has been bothering me from the beginning.

The problem is that the picture, although good in quality, is twitching every now and then. About every three to five seconds comes a short (about quarter of a second) jerk, and it is quite annoying. The signal strength is about 55%. But that propably is not the case. I have two TechnoTrend Budget T1500 DVB-T cards. PCI Delay is enabled in BIOS, and PCI latency is 32.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of it and/or how can I debug it?

Have you checked if dma is enabled on the hard drive?

Also, do you get the twitching when watching an already recorded program?

Thanks for the tip!

After a little googling and looking through manufacturers specs, I set the DMA on with hdparm. But unfortunately it didn't help.

Then I tested it with a few AVI's and DVD's. They are playing fine, so the the twitching occurs when wathing LiveTV or recorded shows.

Any suggestions other that to get a new motherboard and stuff?

Although i'm pretty sure that CPU is powerful enough, what's the CPU usage like while watching live tv? If you don't know how to find out, ssh in from another PC and run the command: top

Other than that i'm not sure what else you could try, i've only experience with the Hauppauge nova-t's.

CPU seems to running at about 27-34%us, 3-5.5%sy, 0%ni, 60-65%id, 0-0-0.5%hi, 0.7%si, 0.0%st. So that's propably not an issue.

But hey - could memory cause this twitching?

I have 513280k total, but only about 4000k free, and I'm running only one instance of LiveTV? Other values are about 2000k buffers, 330000k cached.

I used to have these sort of problems. I found it was fixed when I made the video resolution exactly the same as the tv, which is a PAL 4:3 CRT. This is probably not your problem because you've just installed, but I started with Mythtv version 0.18 and until recently was having quite a few glitches on some channels. I did a rescan of the channels using the automatic scan in 0.20 and the signal strength shows as more than 10% higher and there aren't any glitches.

Jari-Matti, look at the output from mythfrontend. It is usually in ~mythtv/.xsession-errors, or you can strt up an XTerm (Alt-X) and type mythfrontend in there.

If the problem is interference or low signal strength, this usually comes as errors in the scream which will be logged. Similarly if your video card drivers don't support XV.

You could also try Xine or MPlayer on the recorded files.

I havn't tested the screen resolution issue yet, but it's next on my list to do... The signal strength shows about 60%, so it should be enough. However, mythfrontend output was like the one below. The most interesting part is at the end: "NVP: prebuffering pause" occurs in the log just as many times as there are twitches when watching LiveTV!

I tried that many times and that must be the reason. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

Some progress...

The prebuffering pause does not seem to be related to DVB-T -cards. When watching the captured streams from my XP machine, they play very nicely.

So the problem is related to playing the recordings. Either audio or video. I'm having Radeon 8500, with the drivers that came with KnoppMyth R5E50, tried the proprietary drivers but never got them to work.

Does anyone have a clue about what might be causing the NVP: prebuffering pause -issue?

It's working now!

The problem was with audio. In general settings I selected "AC3 throughput to SPDIF" and aggresive soundcard management.

Voila - twitching is gone, no more prebuffering pause-errors!

Thanks for everyone for their help!
