Hi Everyone.
I am new to this hobby. I already have 2 tivo with basic services, Even then I am interested in this project. I have one spare Athlon 2400 + with 1 gb ram and 200 GB hard drive. However I don't have tuner card.
I want to get very basic tunerr to begin with. My aim for this project is to stream TV over internet. Once successful, I can go ahead with other card.
Which is the basic card I can start with. I know PVR 150 is good. But If successful , I want to go with PVR 500 so I just want to get some basic & cheap. Please help me with this. which card is compitable.
I am looking for wintv plus or TV Wonderâ„¢ VE Remote Control Edition PCI .
will this work?

I can't comment on HD tuner cards, but everything I've seen everywhere, pretty much, says stick with Hauppauge
I have a pvr-350, due to it having a built-in TV out. I haven't finished my project yet, but from my readings the tv-out has it's ups and downs.

You don't say if you're using cable, dish, or OTA. I use the air2pc card, $39.99 on ebay. Its ATSC only, and it works very nicely.
I have a Sempron 2800+, so I'm guessing your Athlon will perform similarly. Also I have 1gb of RAM, though I get the feeling most here are using 512mb. Until you get the hang of how to set the recording quality, you may find the 200mb filling up very quick. I have 250mb, and it went in under three weeks.
I got interested in this because I got a ReplayTV and an HDTV at the same time. The difference in quality is dramatic for me. I've had many problems, but everyone here has been quite helpful and I'm running pretty smoothly now. Good Luck!

The Air2PC is an Over the air HD tuner card so that is NOT what you want to use with Comcast.
Honestly your box is a little weak to do HD so I think you better stick to analog tuners.

You said you might want the PVR500 later so I'd say just get that one now. I've noticed better video quality out of the captures from the PVR500 compared to my PVR250. The only reason why I still have the 250 in the box is so that I can have some sort of remote control (I don't have a serial or usb IR receiver right now). It's a little more money initially but you'll save it later when you want to add the other card.

That will be in another post however. slowtolearn wrote: And which is the better of "RE: Pirelli Webbing vs. Spring Suspension in Sofa"?

Disk space is very addictive.
I started with the std 200MB, but we filled that pretty quickly. The most common quote in our house is "dont delete that, I'm hoping to watch it". We have a crapload of crap with auto-archive turned off in the hope we will get to watch it. But that means your regular stuff disappears even faster.
Another disk will sort it out, we thought. Well, two disks and 1TB later... disks are full, and we're beginning to think, just another TB and we'll be right.
The 3 kids are too young to choose programs to want to record programs yet, but in another year or two, I can see me hiring space in a local datawarehouse...

Actually, I was picking on mogator88 for his apparent typo - 250 MB instead of what I assumed he meant - 250 GB.
We haven't gone to a TB yet, I placed a 250Gb disk in the backend and mounted that as /myth/tv. We have another 750Gb that we store our videos, music and pictures on, and that went pretty fast when my wife decided to rip the 5-season Soprano's DVD package! (Come to think of it, I guess we are at a TB - 750Gb + 250Gb)

I should too! slowtolearn, apparetnly I missed your joke entirely. I was thinking, here's someone who actually records more than I do! Yes, for the record, it is 250gb. fI'll be checking the Sunday papers for a good deal on more disk space.

Yes, for the record, it is 250gb. fI'll be checking the Sunday papers for a good deal on more disk space. We're definitely not recording more than you are if you're burning through 250Gb in 3 weeks! If you are using your KM system(s) mostly for recording TV then you may want to consider mounting a separate hard drive in /myth/tv as I did. This way whatever you have in place is still there and you increase your recording capacity by X (however big a drive you pick).
I did this after adding 2 new tuners and finding that my wife and kids were having no problems using them! So far, so good...
