First gather a little diagnostic information.

What do these commands show on your machine?
Code:
root@black2:~# grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
        Driver      "kbd"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Driver          "mouse"
        Driver      "nvidia"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
root@black2:~# grep nv /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o
(II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
root@black2:~# grep 'Setting mode' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "640x480"

We're looking to see that you're using the Nvidia diriver at an appropriate resolution.

Next how about this?
Code:
root@black2:~# for i in /dev/[hs]d[a-d] ; do hdparm $i ; done

/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 30401/255/63, sectors = 488397168, start = 0

/dev/hdb:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 30401/255/63, sectors = 488397168, start = 0

/dev/hdc:
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

/dev/sda:
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 60801/255/63, sectors = 976773168, start = 0

You're looking for the DMA setting which should be "on" for PATA IDE drives.
