This is happening with an 1200MHz EPIA MII board.

Everything else seemed to work, I already have a backend running on a 533MHz PIII Katmai (see sig). The EPIA box could see the backend, watch live TV or watch recordings. I didn't try viewing DVDs or playing CDs or anything like that.

However: there was a complete lack of sound output. Having chased a couple of threads here yesterday, I was alerted to the idea that maybe the ALSA mixer was set up wrong - someone suggested the use of 'alsamixer' to check that.

So I ran 'alsamixer' and it barfed out. Apparently I either don't have /dev/dsp or /dev/mixer working when in Frontend-only mode off the CD on an EPIA.

I did do a "lsmod | grep sound" and quite a lot of drivers were in there for the EPIA motherboard's sound chip and "soundcore" and that sort of thing. But evidently incomplete in some major way.

Presumably a bug in the setup scripts on the boot CD?

So I installed off the CD and tried that too. This time 'alsamixer' did work, and I suspect everything else was working but it was 00:30, my backend crashed out for some reason and I didn't have time to get it all going to prove that the sound was actually working!

EPIA sound *does* work when you install to disk, but doesn't if you run the frontend off the boot disk.

Next trick: to find out how to disable the "free" backend I got with that frontend I installed to disk!
