I just set up knoppmyth v4r4 and would like some clarification on the settings in alsamixer for the Hauppuage wintv 401 tuner card. I found earlier posts discussing this issue here, but couldn't really follow what needs to be muted in order for tv sound to work properly. I do have the patch cable running from the tuner card to the on-board line-in, I'm just looking to get what's happening spelled out as I have tinkered with it and scrambled my original settings and would like to get it working again. Thanks in advance, and thanks for the great product if the developers are reading this. DM

well if you are going to the line in you will need to make sure that line in is set as the captur device by pressing space and then muted by pressing M. then if you haven't messed up your output volumes you should be set.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just now had a chance to play with it, and muting line-in left me with no sound for tv, rather than the delayed non-ending sound I had before. I tried setting mic to Captur and muting it with same result. Music sound is fine either way. I'll double-check the physical connection when I get home again. Can you explain why I should be muting line-in? I would think this is the sound I'm tring to play. In essence, I'm confused on what I'm trying to achieve here....what is captur and why do I mute it? Thanks for the reply, and especially the patience. DM

This information may or may not be useful to you. When you run alsamixer the options you see there are related to what type of sound card you have. Granted the basic line in etc options should be there for all sound cards.

I'm using the SoundBlaster Live! card with the hauppauge 401 card. My alsamixer settings are the following:

Master 80
MasterM 100 Muted
Bass 50
Treble 50
PCM 84
Wave 100 Captured
Line 0 Muted Captured
Capture 100 Captured
AC97Cap 100

The thing that caused me the most headaches was the AC97Cap option. No one ever mentioned it in the forums or the MythTV archive but without it I can't hear anything at all regardless of the line in settings.

I hope this is of some use to you. Knowing this would have saved me a lot of time.

Thanks for the info. I finally figured it out. I'm using a Tyan s2495 motherboard with on-board sound, and there are so many options in Alsamixer it was bewildering. I had scrambled them up pretty good too in trying to get it working. By chance I found that on re-boot (it had been a while) the settings went back to the install default. From there I followed Xsecrets instructions, switched the audio to dsp0 in MythTv setup, and that took care of it. Thanks to both of you for the help and patience. DM
