I currently have the IR receiver that comes with the ASUS P5W DH which is really nice and small (USB). Its too bad it doesn't seem be be able to read any other remotes. Its also too bad the Asus remote only has 11 buttons.

I was originally going to build my own serial IR receiver and use a universal remote. But the end result of any home built part would have looked pretty ugly in my living room.

The StreamZap just worked (saving time and frustration) and looks decent in my collection of remotes.

Like the MCE remote, it's going to be a single purpose remote. But now I can use any universal remote since I have the receiver.

Consider either of these as an IR receiver with a remote included. If you don't like the remote, you can always substitute it for another.

I'm looking at the streamzap now, since I have usb ports available and will need remotes anyway.

It's especially good that any remote would work in case I need a replacement later.

It's even better that it doesn't come from Microsoft.

I found the streamzap for $27 on http://www.provantage.com/streamzap-usbir2~7STRE001.htm

I just have to trust provantage. Never dealt with them before, and I don't like how it says "no returns".

Edit: did a google search and found very little bitching about provantage.

I think that thinkgeek.com is an "authorized dealer"

http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/mp3/5a20

might be worth the extra $3.

Well, I found provantage on streamzap.com as an authorized dealer also.

I saw thinkgeek listed there too but for some reason I just didn't go look.

Bo biggie. Already ordered, and I'm not too worried since it's only $61 for two remotes.

What driver does the streamzap use?

I actually have no idea!
I think that at one point (earlier version of KnoppMyth) I had to configure the remote during install (select from a list). But I don't think I had to do anything for my R5E50 install. As I said before "it just worked".

I got mine from Amazon.com.

I have a NMedia HTPC 400BA with the IR window... They provide instructions on how to dismantle the Microsoft MCE IR Receiver and mount it inside the case for use... Maybe your case works that way too?

Freaking nice configuration!

I just got the streamzap remotes today, plugged one in, dug up some batteries, and ran the lirc-reconfig.sh program. I thought I'd be futzing around for a while trying to figure out which remote to pick from the list, but the program detected the streamzap for me. I didn't have to pick anything.

Remembering what program to run (lirc-reconfig.sh) was more trouble than getting the thing to work!

At first when I tried it, my heart dropped because nothing happened, but then I realized I had the receiver hiding behind the keyboard. doh!

Glad you got it working.

If you are brave enough to disassemble everything, I'd like to see pictures of the StreamZap receiver insides.

I've got internal USB headers available for mounting it in my case.
I'd love to add an IR window to my case (next to the encoder status LED's). Any suggestions for and IR window?

I don't see any simple way of opening it up. No screws. It probably snaps together. If I tried to open it, I'll probably end up mangling it, which would kind of suck for me.

But figures I went to go examine the thing before I remembered that I don't actually have a camera. Just as well I didn't try opening it.

An internal mount would be very cool, but the receiver on it's own looks decent enough already. The nice thing about leaving it external is that it can be swapped around if necessary.

If I had a quiet case good for the living area, I'd go with an internal too, but it's good enough for now.

I just got the streamzap remote. The receiver module looks bigger in the picture than it is. In fact it fits perfectly into the nMedia IR reck with a little bit of velcro. Took 2 minutes to set up.

Danial

Sweet.

Yeah, the receiver is a little less than 2" wide by 2.5 " long.
