What is recommended and why?

Installation of pcHDTV or recompile and installation of bttv 9.15.

My system has a pvr-250 and Winfast2000.

Thanks,
Mike G.

You can:
A) Get bttv 9.15 from bytesex.org and install that(my recommendation).
B) Use the pcHDTV kernel and recompile ivtv using videodev2.h from ivtv's utils sub-dir.
C) Wait R4V4(it will be out after 0.15 comes out...)

Unfortunately a fresh clean install of R4V4 still seems to have the Dark Red problem, at least with my Aver TV Studeo card. Seems like I get the Red and Green scans, but no Blue. I don't know if the brightness is just the missing Blue, or another incorrect setting.

In an earlier post:

Could the link to the post referencing the recompile of bttv 9.15 be posted.

Also what is recommended pchdtv_kernel or recompile od bttv 9.15?

I believe the post you are referring to is the one from krypton_john:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1443&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc

His downloading and installing instructions seem pretty good. I didn't seem to end up in the same directories as he did when entering superuser mode, so I had to do a little manual "cd"ing.

My concern with his instructions that they are specific to PVR-250 MCE OEM PAL version. It probably makes no difference until point 12 - "Edit /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv".
Quote:
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
options ivtv ivtv_debug=1 cardtype=2 tda9887=1
options tuner type=45
options tda9887
options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner tda9887
add above ivtv lirc_dev lirc_i2c
post-install ivtv /usr/local/bin/test_ioctl -u 0xff -p 4 -f width=720,height=576

My guess would be that the reference to "cardtype=2", "tda9887=1", "tuner type=45" and of course the Pal specific "width=720,height=576" are not correct for a North American BT878 card user.

I did try the recompile, and thought it had fixed things, until I recorded something and got a half-hour of dark red with good quality audio track.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Ian

well any post that references ivtv would not be the one you are concerned with since this is a bttv card and never uses ivtv.

An update R4V4 will be available later today that should hopfully take the red out.

Sadly even a fresh clean install of R4V4.1 doesn't get the red out.

After the install the machine naturally went to channel 3. I went up the scale a bit to a late night colour-bar broadcast, shutdown to power off, and restarted. The tuner stayed on the colour-bar channel, and confirmed my earlier suspicion that just the Red and Green scans are showing. The blue scan is missing.

Just like when shampooing, I repeated the process for confirmation and to make sure the problem could be demonstrated. Well actually repeated it three times, all with the same result.

So I guess the problem isn't so much getting the Red out, as it is adding the Blue in.

so your's never shows the blue? If that's the case I would suspect your card not the bttv drivers. I had this problem with R4v3 and it usually took 10 to 30 min before it kicked in, which is the same that most everyone else has reported.

Xsecrets:

Perhaps you should go back and read page 1 of this tread.

The problem is when the machine is booted, and you first try to view or record TV the video appears almost black with red overtones. When you change the channel, you get regular video. It occasionally also happens with a scheduled recording even if the channel has previously been changed.

I suppose an intrim solution would be to schedule a 1 minute recording on the "blue news" channel a few minutes before what I really want to record. That would force a change channel. A bit of a pain though

New to myth, so pardon my ignorance, but let me see if I understand my options.

I'm running the i686 kernel from the R4V4 knopp iso cd and a bttv tuner, and I get the occasional black/dark red recording. I used this kernel because I wanted my IR remote to work.

Should I still try loading a different kernel?

Will i lose the support for the IR remote when I do this? And if so, is there a way to get that support back?

Has it been decided what the cause is and how to fix this problem? I am using a Pinnacle PCTV and about 1 in 10 recordings is dark.

Here are the instructions I used to install the updated bttv driver.

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... +ivtv+9+15

Only need to do the following as "su":

1) cd into a working directory

2) wget http://dl.bytesex.org/releases/video4li ... .15.tar.gz
tar xvfz bttv-0.9.15.tar.gz

3) Unpack the kernel sources
su
cd /usr/src
bzcat linux-2.4.25-chw.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -
copy build config to kernel source tree and fix the /usr/src/linux symlink to point to the unpacked kernel source
cp linux/.config linux-2.4.25-chw
rm linux
ln -s linux-2.4.25-chw linux
cd linux-2.4.25-chw
make oldconfig dep

4) compile the bttv code
cd back to your working directory
cd bttv-0.9.15
make

5) Install the bttv kernel modules
make install

6) Reboot

This seems to have cleared up my dark red recording issues. Thanks to krypton_john and everyone else who helped him for his original post.

Hmm.. got another recording today that was dark, so the bttv drivers may not be the fix to this issue.
