When I try
Code:
irw

as root I get the following
Code:
connect: Connection refused

However, if I first run
Code:
lircd
as root and then
Code:
irw

irw launches but I do not get any feedback printed out on the screen when I press buttons.

Alright here is the result of
Code:
ls -la /dev/lirc*

Code:
crw-r--r--  1 root root 61, 0 Jan 23  2006 /dev/lirc
crw-r--r--  1 root root 61, 1 Oct  1  2005 /dev/lirc1
srw-rw-rw-  1 root root     0 Aug 22 00:06 /dev/lircd
prw-r--r--  1 root root     0 Jul 30  2004 /dev/lircm

I have also just discovered the launching irw as root kills the lircd process!

Which MCEUSB remote do you have?
a) MCEUSB (older).
b) MCEUSB (newer).

i have choosed "b"

NOTE, the included lircrc is for the older MCEUSB and may not work.
If you have an updated version, please send it to knoppmyth@gmail.com
System startup links for /etc/init.d/lirc already exist.

I've been having the identical problem that Sithlord is experiencing. I was building a new box with R5D1, but when I saw R5E50 was available, I went for it. Unfortunately I'm still having the same problem. Here's what I can tell you:
1) Typing lsusb shows the receiver is being detected.
2) Typing lircd tells me it's all ready running.
3) Typing irw takes me right back to a shell prompt.
4) Pressing buttons on the remote illuminates the LED on the receiver.

I'm at work so I can't copy off any output, but I'm wide open for suggestions. Thanks for any advice!

-Jim

I have similar but not the same issues with my R5E50 installation:

here is my /etc/lirc/hardware.conf

Quote:

# /etc/lirc/hardware.conf
#
# Arguments which will be used when launching lircd
LIRCD_ARGS=""

#Don't start lircmd even if there seems to be a good config file
START_LIRCMD=false

#Try to load appropriate kernel modules
LOAD_MODULES=true

# Run "lircd --driver=help" for a list of supported drivers.
DRIVER="default"
# If DEVICE is set to /dev/lirc and devfs is in use /dev/lirc/0 will be
# automatically used instead
DEVICE="/dev/usb/hiddev0"
MODULES="lirc_dev lirc_mceusb2"

Here is an interesting interaction with the shell:

Quote:

root@mythtv:/etc/init.d# irw
connect: Connection refused
root@mythtv:/etc/init.d# lircd
root@mythtv:/etc/init.d# irw
root@mythtv:/etc/init.d# lircd
root@mythtv:/etc/init.d# lircd
lircd: there seems to already be a lircd process with pid 6052
lircd: otherwise delete stale lockfile /var/run/lircd.pid
root@mythtv:/etc/init.d# irw
root@mythtv:/etc/init.d# irw
connect: Connection refused
root@mythtv:/etc/init.d#

So irw must be killing lircd. Any ideas?

I have the MCE 2005 (AKA newer version) remote and receiver. I dont need to use the IR blaster (firewire worked a charm!) but im having an awful time getting this to work.

Ive found a lot of information about this, but I'm no closer to a solution. I tried compiling LIRC from source (as per mythtv's wiki) but I am unable to do this due to not having the kernel source (and boy did I search!) or understanding how to point the script to the "kernel headers" so that it will compile.

The jist of what I understand is that I need a newer/better script. If this is the case, can anyone point me in the direction of this script?

I've done some editing according to the guide from simonf here, when I run
Code:
cat /dev/lirc0
and press buttions on the remote, I get a response on the screen. Where can I go from here? Ive pretty much copied his configs to no avail.

irw does nothing under user myttv and says "connect: No such file or directory" when run as root

TgT, as root, did you try

Code:
cd /usr/src
tar jxvf kernel-source-2.6.15-chw-2.tar.bz2

to get the header files?

hey guys, when I try

Code:
cat /dev/lirc0

I get the following:

Code:
cat: /dev/lirc0: No such file or directory

When I try the following:
Code:
cat /dev/usb/hiddev0

nothing happens and the console become unresponsive. Nothing happens when I press buttons on the remote. Does mean anything?

Thanks for posting

Here's the wierd thing, the file isnt on my system to extract! I search the whole system for anything containiing "kernel-source" and got nothing :(

I do have a directory called "linux-headers-2.6.18-ch1-13" however. So how do I "plug this in" and get LIRC (and ideally later NVidia drivers) to complie?

I should make the point that it is a clean install, not an upgrade.

Sorry I don't know much about kernel headers. I had problems of my own over here

but that doesn't help you, sorry. Someone around here must know what to do....

Looks like the same issie, no kernel source tarball.

So did you get the remote up and running in the end?

It looks like the disk image only contains the headers and not the source. I booted the knoppmyth CDROM, dropped to a console and searched the disk. All I could find was kernel-headers.

Now if I knew what to do with the headers I could probably make some progress.

Now when I run cat /dev/lirc0 and press buttons on the remote I get a response, so somthing, somwhere is working.

Any thoughts folks? The MythTV machine is sitting beside the TV waiting for the WAF (Wife accepance factor)

Should I revert to a older image of knoppmyth?
