I've got the same problem. I also have onboard AC97 and a PCHDTV 5500. I just got the 5500 and was hoping to get it to work with what I have installed... R5A12.. i know.. its old :) Then I thought I'd install the latest to solve it. Oh well... I guess the 5500 goes on the shelf until the next release.

I been playing with Vista Media Center on the same machine that I run MythTV and it has serious performance issues. I cannot get smooth HDTV playback at 720p or 1080i! I am impressed that linux/mythtv is so much more efficient. Mythtv playback of HDTV is flawless on my machine. I will admit however that Vista Media Center has a much nicer GUI; pretty buttons, nice sounds, slick GUI animations.

I thought I'd chime in and say I have the same problem, PCHDTV5500, hang at "Setting default volumes".

Anyone have a fix yet?

No fix but I was able to workaround the problem with the help of mmcgrath10. The workaround is not 100% but mythtv is usable. The only persitant problem I get is the a Kernel oops every time I "shutdown -r now". The ALSA shutdown script is causing it.

Here is what mmcgrath10 sent me:

"Nate,

I figured out a workaround for our problem. Basically, the issue is that the cx88-alsa module doesn't implement certain audio mixer calls correctly and crashes whenever an app tries to adjust its audio level settings.

However, the cx88alsa module is used only for ANALOG reception with the pcHDTV card. DTV carries the audio inside the MPEG stream which gets sent directly to the disk. Basically, the module is not important unless you need analog tv. As I use a pvr 250 for that, I went ahead and figured out a way to take it out of the equation.

My workaround was to remove the pcHDTV card and run alsa_init as root, setting the levels for the soundcard and making alsa run nice. I saw that you were having problems with sound after changing the alsa version, so you might just reinstall R5D1 and leave the pcHDTV card out.

Next, I put the pcHDTV card back in and skiped any audio configuration. I checked using "cat /proc/asound/pcm" and noticed that the pcHDTV 5500 card is loaded as the primary sound card, so whenever KnoppMyth tries to set the default columes, it thinks it is talking to a real sound card at ID 0 but it is getting the pcHDTV instead. I had to then run "alsamixer -d 1" to control my soundblaster live volumes. Finally I had to go into the myhtfrontend setup and change the audio device to /dev/dsp1 and the mixer device to /dev/mixer1.

Once I did this, audio playback worked perfectly."

If the cx88-alsa module could be removed/disabled that might fix this for good. What good is ALSA support for a Fusion/pcHDTV card?

Now Im going to try to update to Myth .20a with the debs.

-Nate

I put the cx88_alsa module on the blacklist in hotplug. This way you can leave the module alone and it won't get loaded.

This works great- no kernel panics on shutdown.

Same problems here with a Fusion Gold and Intel HD Audio. Updated to alsa 13, but isn't making a difference.

Thought I would chime in here too, have same problem and I wanted to put a watch on this thread just incase someone comes up with a work around.

I have onboard sound and an ATI HDTV wonder. Someone suggested doing the following:

Code:
Run this as root after Linux is booted:
modprobe -r cx88_alsa
modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
modprobe snd_hda_intel
modprobe cx88_alsa

But when I run the last modprobe I get:

Code:
FATAL: Error inserting cx88_alsa (/lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2200.fc5/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx88-alsa.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

And dmesg is full of

Code:
cx88_alsa: disagrees about version of symbol snd_ctl_add
cx88_alsa: Unknown symbol snd_ctl_add
cx88_alsa: disagrees about version of symbol snd_pcm_new
cx88_alsa: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_new
cx88_alsa: disagrees about version of symbol snd_card_register
cx88_alsa: Unknown symbol snd_card_register

My Solution....

Remove DVB card, and install KnopMyth right up to the point of it asking for the root password for setup.

ctrl+alt+f1
login as root.
edit the /etc/hotplug/blacklist file, add cx88_alsa to the list

Save the file, and power off the machine.
Insert the DVB card, boot, and continue the install as normal.

The conflicting and UNNEEDED cx88_alsa wont load now, so sound should work as normal.
