In my case, I can not "fix" the blinky light lockup at boot by disconnecting my network cable. I have a DFI KM400 motherboard, PVR-350, and am running R4V4.
I also have some of the other lockup issues that have been described in other threads and have decided to switch to the much-heralded Chaintech 7NIF2 motherboard and start over with R4V5. We shall see if that fixes the problems.

These are my 1st attempts at installing KnoppMyth.
After successful auto-install, hd boot up results in PC hang (with infamous blinky keyboard lights). Last displayed line is:
Code: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51
This is just after "KSCRIPTS starting syslogd and klogd"-like line in boot log.
NB:
Audio and tv cards may be sharing an interrupt as they are sharing irq 5, I think, on my win2K setup (separate western digital HD).
Following suggestions read here and there, I kept pressing shift key during installation as I had systematic hangs during "copying files" phase of auto-install with R4V4.1 (never tried pressing shift key with that one and moved right away to R4V5).
I'm willing to investigate but I must admit I'm not a Linux kernel expert. So any help/directions on what to look at next would be greatly appreciated. I managed to boot on the CD and chdir to /proc (with a damn US config on my french kb - not so easy), so I can cat interrupts, version, lsmod, etc.

might try disconnecting the network cable then booting up.

I did disconnect the phone line before going through install & boot.
Should I try removing the Bewan PCI modem card itself (it's directly connected to the phone line) before installing/booting ?

Starting after r4v5 i started getting the blinking lights on 1 via kt6 and 1 nforce2 k7n2. here is the error on hte via
Quote: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51
i unpluged the network cable and it would boot. I then changed it from Dhcp to static as well. So far i can restart my system no problems. I have no idea if the DCHP helped or didnt make a difference, just throwing it out there

I have had 'blinky boot lights' since R4v3 and still with r4V5. Always static IP and always 100% avoided w/ LAN disconnected.
Does suck when I forget to connect the cable, or I doing something remote from work.
Is there someway to load the networking pieces at a different time, later in the boot. seems like an odd timeing issue

I have the exact same problem with my setup. I boot with the network cable detached and once booted, I plug it back in. Kind of a pain, especially when the electricity goes out, but it works.

I highly recommend getting a UPS, they're realtively cheap and will save you endless grief.

Sure a UPS would be great if the electricity just flickered off and on for a few minutes. Usually when it goes out it's out for quite a while though. It's not that big of a deal to me personally. Unplug a cable and plug it back in... not a problem. It would be nice if someone could figure out the root of the problem and fix it though

When you guys talk about "unplugging the network cable", I guess you have an ethernet cable that is plugged at the back of your PC into your ethernet card (or similar) ?
In my case, the ADSL modem and network card are integrated and are meant to use pppoa (PPP over ATM) layers which somehow complicates things a little. Unplugging the phone line from the card probably cannot sove the problem. So I guess I'll try at least once to remove the BeWan card before booting.

See if your provider will switch you to an external DSL modem with a network interconnect. In general I find them to be much less trouble than built-in or USB models, and they provide more flexibility in that you can use external router/firewalls and other components. Highly recommended!

Thanks for the suggestion.
Anyway, I intended to switch my installation to wifi sooner or later (linksys wag54g modem router + linksys wmp54g network adapter). I hope that will change things favorably...

well that will change things, but not necessarily for the better. 54G support in linux is sketchy at best, and none is included "out of the box" in knoppmyth

My problem disappeared.
As a reminder, I had a systematic hang (+blinky kb lights) when booting mythtv from hd, with following last line of log:
Code: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51
What I did is to perform some radical low-level maintenance on my IBM disk using "Hitachi Feature Tool" and "Hitachi Drive Fitness Test" and then re-install. These tools are available on:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
They allow to create boot floppies that will automatically launch the mentionned tools. So basically I:
- performed a low-level erase of the disk
- activated S.M.A.R.T (I didn't even know it supported this)
- activated sound control (sigh, this disk had always been so noisy...)
- switched its DMA mode from ATA100 to UDMA33 !!!
The last item was probably the key modification as my mb only supports up to UDMA33 !! FYI I had bought this IBM disk long ago to replace a defective Quantum Fireball and had had many troubles (unrecoverable bad sectors, WinMe crashes...) with it until I decided a few months ago to replace it with a Western Digital and migrate to Win2K... Using this spare IBM hd (mounted in a removable rack) to test KnoppMyth was the initial idea that led me to all this...
Anyway, the KnoppMyth install now boots (had a few errors here and there: i686 packages failure - reverted to i586, syntax errors in /init/rcS.d/S48console-screen.sh etc.).
I'm currently still stuck in mythtv-setup as I need to get network going in order to retrieve program information... but this is another story.
Sorry for the long story. So beware of hd configuration...

I have had random blinky lights for a while. I just tried to plug in an Archos Jukebox 20 USB mp3 player/harddrive and get the problem 100% of the time. Doing a search of the drivers found this page:
http://bjorn.haxx.se/isd200/
Which mentions a lockup problem with the "preempt and/or lock break patch". Looking at the knoppmyth changelog shows that the preempt patch was added in V3 (I'm using V4) where it appears these problems started.
Might this be the problem? I'm not sure how to remove this patch and re-build the kernel, but would be willing to try if someone could point me to directions...
