This isn't really a problem, I don't think. I am having some kernel oops, so it may be, but I was just curious why you are using an SMP kernel?

I would assume to take advantage of multiple capture cards. This way, if you have 2 cards, each will be running on a different processor and give you less CPU overhead.
Also, for a single capture card system, where you are currently encoding a video and at the same time playing a video. One processor can be de-compressing the MPEG stream for playback, while the other processor can take care of the encoding.

I figured why not... Some folks are using SMP systems. I'm not 100% certain if libavcoded uses SMP or not...I think it does. Running an SMP kernel on a uni-processor system shouldn't be an issue. If you think it is, you can recompile.
