Post subject:  Need suggestions on a small front-end box
I'm using Mythtv for DVD playback only. Well I also use MythMusic, MythGames, the weather, news info. All of my DVD's are in iso format on my file server.

Can someone suggested a small front end for me to use? I like shuttles and pundits but I'm open to anything that works well with KnoppMyth.

I would like a small front end that supports, spdif digital out (fiber or coax), s-video and DVI. I plan to purchase an HDTV in about 6 months or so and I would like the ability to use DVI in the near future.

My current system is s black tower that's noisy and does not have digital out with s-video/vga only. I would like something smaller, quiet but also includes the other features I want to use.

BTW: I'm controlling my box at the moment with a Logitec wireless keyboard. I have an irBlaster but dread setting it up and I don't have a TV capture card with a remote. Is there another remote I can use that's easy to setup? The logitec keyboard also doesnt work at all from over 6' away.

Thanks for any suggestion you can offer.

I've got the same motherboard in a bigger case, but would love to have that sleek little case!
The Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard has everything you need onboard for full HDTV output! Plus, it has gigabit ethernet on board. It is so sweet. 8)

Now, with KnoppMyth R5D1, it works perfectly out of the box. In previous versions of KnoppMyth you had to update lots of drivers to get it to work, but that is history now!

If you know how to teach a particular IR remote to KnoppMyth, then any remote will work. If you want to buy a remote that has already been taught to KnoppMyth, there are quite a few remotes included in KnoppMyth right now.

I'm using an RS-232 IR receiver connected to the com1 port of the computer - works great after setup in KnoppMyth. I've used the Hauppauge silver "dogbone" remote that comes with the PVR-150 cards as well as the RCA remote that came with the DTC-100 HDTV receiver. Both work fine for me when I have the correct configuration files installed in KnoppMyth.

You've sold me! One more question. What do you use or what would I use for 5.1 surround sound if I bought this machine?

My friend is using the same system as me and he went out to Best Buy and bought a Yamaha "home theater in a box" for $300, which included 5.1 surround amplifier, speakers, subwoofer, etc. It works well with the digital audio output (SPDIF). For now, I'm still using the analog output in stereo.

If you buy your own Asus motherboard you need to purchase the tv-output module and the spdif output module separately from the Asus eStore. If you choose to buy a complete unit that has spdif and tv out in it already, you're covered.

My question was a bit vague. Sorry about that. I didn't notice an spdif out on the box and was wondering. I have a Sony 5.1 system that I bought on ebay for $200. It came with 5 speakers, and has fiber & coax inputs.

Thanks again for the info. I will certainly make a purchase.

The web page says the unit has 6 channel audio output. I believe that translates into digital audio output or spdif - ask to make sure.

If the slim box doesn't have digital audio output, you can buy the spdif module for the Asus motherboard at:

I've been using this box for about a week, and it does a good job too. For $225 at New Egg, you can't beat the price. Only trouble is fast-forwarding through the MPEG-2 transport streams.
