Hello,

I ran into what I think are strange issues while doing some hardware changes in conjunction with an upgrade to R5D1. I recently purchased a 400GB hard drive (to replace my existing 80G drive) and a PNY Nvidia 6600GT videcard (to replace my ATI AIW 7500). I successfully did an initial install of R5B7 (my original KM version) to the 400GB drive with the Nvidia card. I then copied the entire /myth partition from my existing 80Gb drive over to the 400Gb drive. Prior to shutting down my myth PC I created a backup using the new backup script.

Then I tried to install R5D1 using the "Auto Upgrade" option. The files copied properly and the PC rebooted. When it got to the "Checking Nvidia Installation" (from memory, but something like that) the install process paused a bit (unpacking the kernel sources I guess) and then tried and failed to download the Nvidia drivers. The install continued on until it got to trying to start X, which failed. I was dropped out to the login prompt. After logging in I tried to manually install the Nvidia drivers and got the same error as before. After doing some checking I found that the PC had never gotten an IP address, so I manually configured the eth0 interface and reran the Nvidia install. (as a side question, what is the latest Nvidia driver suggested for use? On their site they list 8776 as available, but the newest one I see mentioned in the forum is 8174.)

This time the driver was downloaded and installed correctly. I was then able to start X successfully. The scripts continued the install process. However, when they finished the FE process never started. I also tried to start "myth-setup" but it never would start (I forgot to make a note of the messages it returned). After several reboots to see if I could get it working I tried installing R5C7. That upgrade went perfectly. The Nvidia drivers were automatically installed as they should be, and after the install process the FE started up with all of my prior settings.

So, now I am running R5C7 on my new hardware. However, I really wanted to get R5D1 installed so I could try cecil's instructions for upgrading to myth 0.20. I know that I don't have much in the way of exact error messages. I was just wondering if I ran into some normal R5D1 upgrade hitch, or did something really strange happen. Maybe I'll just wait for the next KM version before trying another upgrade. Just hoping to avoid all of this weirdness the next time, if possible.

Thanks,

I too am having the same exact problem. However I went a few steps further in trying to figure things out. I agree that the system never tried to connect my ethernet card as my interfaces file contains nothing but the loop back device. I tried running the nvidia install script and it can't find the kernel source files it needs. I went to the source directory to investigate and found the kernel-source tar file was corrupt, it will untar to a certain part and then tar gives out saying its gotten a end of file error. I've tried 4 times with the auto-upgrader and each time is the same. I've tested my cd and its fine. I've got no problems with it accessing the internet now, but I can't find the kernel-source files anywhere. It appears they are custom kernels and can't be downloaded. I'm running a 700 MHz Intel p2, using the Hauppauge 150MCE, 1GB ram, 250GB hard drive. Nothing fancy but it works well.
