Hi All,

I need a bit of a hand, if I can! I'm a bit of a Linux newb, but I've managed to install KnoppMyth, get it up and running, and somehow managed to get my wireless card running with ndiswrapper.

I'm now trying to get my remote working and I'm stuck. I have one of those cheapo Pack Bell remotes, with a serial IR reciever. I have read a lot of contradictory stuff on here about what to do with this remote - some say you have to recompile/reinstall LIRC, others seem to say it should work with what comes with KnoppMyth. I'm not even sure how to start tracing the problem - does it know that the receiver is there, but doesn't have the right conf files to process the input, or has it not even got to recognising the device yet?

Can anyone help me through this? Please don't assume I know ANYTHING! :D

Cheers,
seven

I have this remote and it does work. However I can't remember exactly what I did to get it to work.
You will have to add a "setserial" command to the boot process to setup the COM port when the computer starts.

I found preconfigured lirc config files on the net somewhere, I will try to post mine tonight.

I've just got the IR reciever to work, adding three commands to the bootmisc.sh file (I'll post them a little later).

However, I have a Winfast remote control lying around that looks as though it's buttons are better suited to the Myth TV interface, so I'm going to use that with the receiver that came with the Pack Bell remote. I'm in the process of modding it's CONF file to have the right button names. I'll post when I'm done.

I've picked up one of the Packard Bell remotes for free. Is it working well on the new versions of Knoppmyth? It feels a little cheap though.

Can the receiver be used for other remotes? Tivo, Hauppauge, etc..

This receiver will work with any remote. I use it with a Series2 TiVo remote. I found that if you take the plastic top off the receiver you get much better performance!

Nice! I've got a Series 2 remote that I found at Goodwill. I like its layout.

I use mine with a Harmony remote that is programmed to act as a PVR250 remote.

I have finally got the Packard Bell serial remote working.

I commented out the 8250, 8250_pnp and serial_core lines from /etc/modules.
I then ran modprobe lirc_serial.
I used the config files from here: http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... d&start=45

And that was it.

This is what you did to get the serial receiver to work? Or the remote? Sorry, I'm still learning...

Well... both. :)

I'm using both the PB receiver and remote. I haven't tried with any other remotes.

Hello

I was digging in my closet this week and found an old Parkard Bell remote with the Serial Connection. I was pretty sure it worked but I never actually set it up. I think I got it in around 2004 or so. Anyway I installed R6.01.00 and selected the Packard Bell remote. I left the device connection as default and it did not work. So I checked in bios that the serial port was enabled. Then I changed the connection from default to tty0. One reboot and bam it works!!!

So on R6.01.00 just make sure you match the remote to the picture and set the type of connection and it should work straight out of the box. :D
