In an earlier discussion, some other folks mentioned that it would be cool to have some sort of cool web page where you could decide what functions your hauppauge silver remote (A415-HPG) would perform, in different Knoppmyth applications, and build a custom lircrc file that make your remote do EXACTLY what you want it to do for EVERY button, in EVERY application.

But I need help. I need people to provide positive feedback... constructive criticism, etc., to inspire me to finish this project! It's a lot to bite off & chew, but I think that with help, we together can eventually build a site that will work for not only the hauppauge A415-HPG, but every popular remote in the world. ...well maybe just the top 10. :D

And so, without further ado, please go to this link, and tell me what you think! Be gentle, it's my first time.

http://www.tungsai.com/remote/

Click the "Go" button on the remote, then the "MythTV" tab on the right and you'll see a better idea of what the final product will look like.

and NO I did not test it in IE.

I know that there are many things that need to be done. Here is a list of things I know:

-Compile a complete list of apps we want to assign remote buttons to;
-Find every single function for each of those apps;
-Make tabs for each app, with the appropriate radio buttons in the form;
-Create a MouseOver pop-up dialogue for the remote that shows the Default values;
-write the Javascript / whatever that will actually generate the lircrc file;
-On-screen help and directions
-make it pop up for some default button for the MythTV tab, so it's not blank when first loaded;
-fix the image maps so they match the right function on the remote
-make a favicon

Doesn't work for me either. The other day when you posted a link on the other topic, I was able to get to it but today cannot.

Is that page within a firewall that we on the outside can not access?

I'll have to contact my university to find out why.

Honestly it sounds like a ton of work for very little gain. Is editing the .lirc file really that hard? I sat down and rewrote my .lirc file in less then an hour a year ago.

ok let's try this one:

http://www.tungsai.com/remote

Remember to click on the "Go" button, and the "Mythtv" Tab, as I do not have it set up to default to anything yet.

To me anything Linux-based is a ton of work for very little gain. Maybe that's because I'm a n00b. And, perhaps, this'll fizzle out halfway through. But if I can get enough people to say "This might help me", it'll motivate me to keep it going.

cool! positive feedback! As for Mr. ryanpatterson, I will quote Jack Black in tenacious D and say "Always nay-saying! You... you sit in your tower!"

(Then you laugh at me and I get madder, and fire you from the band, but then you say that won't be necessary, because you quit.)

I have an old script that I wrote a while ago to create a formatted display of all remote button mappings. I found this useful when updating the configs. Also can be used to make a user cheatsheet

It parses ~/.mythtv/lircrc and the data in the keybindings table.

The output looks like this:

Code:
Button [ANT] transmits [A] to [mythtv] which maps to the following functions:
    TV Playback -- Turn on the playback picture adjustment controls
          Music -- Cycle visualizer mode
    TV Playback -- Turn on time stretch control

Button [LIGHT] transmits [L] to [mythtv] which maps to the following functions:
    TV Playback -- Toggle channel browse mode
          Phone -- Loopback Video

Button [INPUT] transmits [H] to [mythtv] which maps to the following functions:
    TV Playback -- Switch to the previous channel

Button [SWAP] transmits [N] to [mythtv] which maps to the following functions:
    TV Playback -- Swap the PiP window channels

Button [1] transmits [1] to [mythtv] which maps to the following functions:
         Global -- 1
    TV Frontend -- Page the program guide forward one day
        Gallery -- Rotate image left 90 degrees
          Phone -- 1

Button [LEFT] transmits [Left] to [mythtv] which maps to the following functions:
         Global -- Left Arrow
    TV Playback -- Jump back
        Gallery -- Scroll image left
          Music -- Move to the previous track
          Video -- Decrease Parental Level
    TV Frontend -- Decrease program or channel rank
          Phone -- Left

The script is setup to create the mapping for host 'mythtv' , the first line in the script can be changed to generate the mapping for other hosts.

If you are intrested in this stuff, follow these steps:

Code:
wget http://www.chrismenard.com/myth/DisplayKeyMap.sh
wget http://www.chrismenard.com/myth/key.awk
chmod +x DisplayKeyMap.sh
./DisplayKeyMap.sh > KeyMapping.txt

Cool, that's helpful. So let me ask you this: In the lircrc, can you make Mythtv use a particular button for different functions, while doing different stuff?

For instance, the >> button might go x3 fast foward while watching TV or a recorded tv show, but in the Gallery it might jump to the next photo, or in the music player, it might skip ahead in the track?

So, in my lircinator, I should have many tabs for within MythTV, such as "TV Playback", "Gallery", etc.

Does that sound right to you all?

Hey, oh, when you say in the "Table", you mean a table in the database?

Don't tell me that we need to make database changes to make this work... :x
