I decided to swith to a new remote (Remotec pre-programmed one) and for that I have to record a new lirc configuration file.

The problem is that when I try to run irrecord, I get "irrecord: could not init hardware (lircd running ? --> close it, check permissions)".

I've tried "killall lirc" and "killall lircd" as su, but the message remains. But irw for example works perfectly. And I guess I have succesfully killed lirc, because if I start frontend, it doesn't respond to my remote.

Could someone post some detailed instructions on how to record a new conf-file, please?

- Did you use ps or pgrep to make sure no lircd processes were still running?

- Did you specify the device (and possibly the driver) to use on the command line? You can get this error if the default doesn't match your real device.
Code:
irrecord -d /dev/lirc0

Thanks t,

The prcess was killed, I checked it with ps. However, I used /dev/ttyS0 as a device, not /dev/lirc. Does that make a difference? I'll test this further when I get back home.

Did you fix the serial port permissions issue described in tjc's upgrade posting? http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13108

Ok, solved! Thanks, guys!

The problem was with the permissions of the lirc ports. I chmodded them to 777 and everything s working fine now.

Plase don't do that. 1) It's a nasty nasty habit. 2) It won't stick over a reboot. The right way to fix this for a serial port is covered in the "R5E50 Upgrade Hints and Hazards" posting here. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13108 See "Known Change #8"

It should have taken less time to follow the link to that sticky post than it did to do the wrong thing, and doing the right thing is usually "the right thing" because it will minimize your grief over any time span longer than 5 minutes... I know we live in an instant gratification culture, but seriously...

I'm with you on that. The chmodding is a bad solution to get it working.

I read your post a long time ago (by the way, thanks for it - it really was a life-saver), but modifying the group-file didn't help in this case. I had already done that a few weeks back.

I didn't know it don't last over reboot, but that's not a problem, since I only did that to irrecorded the remote and have already chmodded them back to the original.

i want to create .conf files for several different remotes (one to be a blaster file).
I want to use a streamzap receiver on a R5F1 setup, and don't want to mess up the working streamzap files.
I ran irrecord and ran into the 'check permissions' message cited in the first post. Don't suppose the R55E50 fix applies to F1
Could I get some guidance aimed at producing the files without blowing my working setup ?
Thanks,

I am running into the same problem as the orginal poster. Like him I just want to run irrecord for a single session so I was going to follow his lead and do a chmod 777. Can someone let me know what file needed its permission changed? Was it lircd? or maybe irrecord itself?
