As far as a remote is concerned, if you already have an IR remote that includes the keys you want (for example, your TV's remote) then you can use irrecord to record key presses and configure a lircrc file to use with Myth - See http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LIRCHowTo (skip the part about compiling lirc, go down to where it talks about irrecord).

BTW, if you ever do have the need for a more expensive "universal" remote, I would recommend the Harmony remotes from Logitech - http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/produ ... ,CRID=2080

I have the 688, which appears to have been replaced by the 670, and everyone in the house loves it. One-button simplicity...

The StreamZap from mythic.tv works great, out of the box. And the Harmony removes know how to mimic the Streamzap for Myth, if you upgrade at some point.
BTW, I picked up my Harmony 880 for $84 a year ago, on a super-duper-mega-deal. I found the deal on fatwallet: there was a "perfect storm" convergence of factory rebates and deep discounts at Dell. It was brand-new, retail box. Awesome. Wife and kids love it. One button to switch from MythTV to XBox (including setting the AV receiver to Video2, TV to Video7). One button to go back. One button to turn it all off. Excellent.

I was originally going to build my own serial IR receiver and use a universal remote. But the end result of any home built part would have looked pretty ugly in my living room.

The StreamZap just worked (saving time and frustration) and looks decent in my collection of remotes.

Like the MCE remote, it's going to be a single purpose remote. But now I can use any universal remote since I have the receiver.

Consider either of these as an IR receiver with a remote included. If you don't like the remote, you can always substitute it for another.

Tried various kinds of searches but couldn't find anything. I hadn't purchased a remote yet for the new box I'm putting together. The pvr500 cards I have didn't come with a remote, unlike my last machine. I'm looking for a good remote that won't use a motherboard slot. I can use either usb or serial, as long as it will work with mythtv. I'd just prefer not to spend $70 on a remote, which is what newegg seems to have when searching on remote. I get either universal remotes or highly expensive IR remotes that don't list where they plug in.

I'll probably wait for the Mindlink(tm) instead though.

I'd categorize this as "clunky" as an IR receiver. I have an ASUS internal now (USB) and its real nice except that the remote only had 10 buttons and it won't read any other remotes. I have an IR window in my case so I'd like something I can stick into there. Anyone know of a USB or internal serial that I can plug into my MB rather than a serial port in the rear or the box? I have the Microsoft MCE Remote ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6880100851 ). it's a cheap buy given that it comes with the Remote, IR Receiver (USB), and 2 IR Blasters all for $38 .. and It works great with MythTV & Xine. Unfortunately, it can't really be programmed as a "Universal" remote, so it's pretty much only for the MythTV. I have no clue if you could take a different Universal Remote and program it to emulate this one.

Unfortunately, those are both external solutions. I have a nice case with an IR window, and it would be cool to use it. hard to believe there aren't many solutions. DT

Not being stupid here, but if your motherboard has the internal USB headers, you should have been supplied with short tails which provide USB sockets to the outside world. Screw one of these off it's brackets. Remove the IR receiver assembly from its case and fit behind the case window. Connect the USB lead of the receiver to the USB tail, tidy up the cables et Volia! I haven't taken the StreamZap apart, but I'm sure the electronics inside would be pretty small. A "big" case such as the StreamZap or the MCE remote would be needed to hold the sensor in place. If "ugly" isn't an issue (since you're looking for an internal solution), any of these options should work. It's a matter of convenience for a build or buy solution. Most motherboards will have internal usb or serial headers.
