I've been scanning the forums for hours and I have yet to find the solution to this problem.

My mythbox has been set up for about 24 hours now and the sound suddenly stopped working. I first noticed this when I connected to the box using VNC and thought it was just a fluke, but now i see it is not outputting any sound from the onboard audio whatsoever. Is the sound a module that could have been disabled? if so, what one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly.

Depends on your hardware. What sound card/chipset are you using? What does alsamixer report?

I was all ready to give you a good readout of everything I would need, but the place I work at blocked port 21 and 22 so I can't use my SSL stuff. I'll wait until I get home once again

Where do I find the alsamixer log you refer to?

EDIT: By the way, the motherboard is an ASUS P5LP-LE out of an HP desktop. It appears to be a Realtek ALC 882 audio chipset.

EDIT AGAIN: I see what you meant now. I just typed "alsamixer" in the terminal. Anyways, it says I have the Realtek 882 chipset. The front and PCM volume is all the way up, and there appears to be a small square with 00 right below every volume bar except the PSM one. Is that the way it is suppose to be?

PCM?

OO indicates that the mixer is not muted. From man alsamixer "When a mixer control is turned off, M (mute) appears below the volume bar. When it's turned on, O in green appears instead. You can toggle the switch via m key." So make sure your Master and PCM are both turned on (OO) and that the volume levels are up. Also make sure that the cable didn't somehow come loose.

Before you responded, I ran the alsaconfig. Now the PCM column is gone entirely. I wonder what I did. I also spent hours last night tracking down all my cords because somehow, my standalone DVD player stopped sending it's signal out from the left channel. I think it died on me...what a strange coincidence.

I just went through the /var/log/messages file and I saw something that was interesting. It may be nothing really..

"hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC882, trying auto-probe from BIOS..."

"bt878: AUDIO driver version 0.0.0 loaded"

Are you having any other "odd" problems? Sounds like you may have a hardware issue to me. Maybe a shutdown will clear the funk?

Some things to check:

Is the onboard audio enabled in the BIOS?
Do you have a Master listed in alsamixer? Is it muted (MM at the bottom)?
What does amixer scontrols show?

Well, my remote worked great at first, then started getting really sluggish, now doesn't work at all. But I doubt that is connected...this is what amixer scontrols said.

Code:
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Simple mixer control 'Front',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Line',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Surround',0
Simple mixer control 'Center',0
Simple mixer control 'LFE',0
Simple mixer control 'Side',0
Simple mixer control 'Line',0
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',1
Simple mixer control 'Capture',2
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',2

Nothing is muted, and Front is at 100%, the rest are at 0%

Check that your modules are loaded: lsmod | grep snd, you should see something like
Code:
snd_intel8x0           32156  0
snd_ac97_codec         94116  1 snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_bus            6144  1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm_oss            42912  0
snd_mixer_oss          18176  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm                69380  3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer              22404  1 snd_pcm
snd                    47588  6 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore              11360  1 snd
snd_page_alloc         11784  2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

Double-check the BIOS.

Here's what I got

Code:
snd_hda_intel          19096  0
snd_hda_codec         159232  1 snd_hda_intel
snd_pcm_oss            42912  0
snd_mixer_oss          18176  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm                69380  3 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer              22404  1 snd_pcm
snd                    47588  6 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore              11360  1 snd
snd_page_alloc         11784  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

EDIT: I went into the BIOS and saw that the onboard audio was set to "Auto", so I changed it to Enabled..it is rebooting now..

So I went and put in an old SB Live! Value Edition I had in one of my servers. alsaconf detected it no problem, loaded the drivers, but when it went to set volume levels, the next message that game up was " Mixer attach default error: No such device" When I try to start up Alsamixer, it gave me the same error.

Here is my running modules...

Code:

snd_seq_oss            34048  0

snd_hwdep              10884  2 snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1

soundcore              11360  1 snd

Now I am off to a drive-in movie with the girlfriend. I'll check up on the forums when I get back.

Scratch all what I have said earlier, my sound works perfectly fine with the SB Live! card in it and a fresh install...in a sense...

Yep, I am completely going insane. This makes absolutely no sense at all. This my what my AV setup is like. I have a 4-input AV switch. This AV switched is connected to my VCR. The VCR's audio output then goes to my large stereo speakers.

This is what I attempted to do. I connected the mythbox using a 1/8" to RCA cable to my switchbox. I get a picture, but no sound. So I switched the cable out. Still, no sound. Switched to another set of cables. No sound. So then I switch which input the mythbox is connected to. I swapped the inputs with my DVD player. the DVD player worked fine on the input the mythbox was just connected to, but the mythbox is still not working on the input the DVD player was just on. WTF! So then I plug a pair of headphones right into the mythbox. There is sound. What the bloody hell is going on? Is someone trying to mess with me? This is not possible! The only thing i can think of is if KM can detect whether or not you are using headphones and work accordingly. Any ideas? Because there is absolutely no chance of something being hooked up wrong (otherwise, the other devices wouldn't work), it is almost as if the Mythbox muted the sound unless headphones were plugged in
