Has anyone successfully gotten a webcam that uses the gspca module to work. I have tried two different models. One that I know works on my kubuntu install and both cause a kernel oops. Just wondering if it was my bad luck, or if the gspca module has a problem or maybe is conflicting with one of the other video drivers.

HI

What kind of webcam is it? I don't know about what modules work but if it works in kubuntu it should work with phone & motion at least. I have found that my R5F1 won't boot with it plugged in. That was with a Logitech. Boot up, plug it in and then go to phone. if it is happy, you see a picture and it should work with motion then also.

one's an old logitech and the other is some noname that everyone on newegg said works with linux. The noname also crashes my kubuntu, but the old logitech works without a hitch in kubuntu, but throws a kernel oops as soon as you plug it into R5F1. Both use the gspca module.

As an FYI, a few years back I had motion running w/ a crappy USB camera. You may need to be consistant on wether the camera is plugged in at boot or not.

On my system, if the webcam was plugged in it was associtated with /dev/video0 which pushed my PVR250's to video1 and video2. Took me a bit of time to fugure out why myth couldn't tune ESPN from the webcam. (myth thought my recording input device was still on video0).

I choose to leave the PVRs on video0 and video1 and plug the webcam in after boot to get video2.

Hi,

I made that same discovery about the shift of video0 and moving the tuner card awhile back with motion.

My KM box just flat won't boot with it plugged in, I forget the error but will report that tonight. It may be mother board related??

Xsecrets, how does one id what module is used for the usb cams? Mine is an older one also, a little "ball"

well I knew from researching on the net, plus I did a tail -f on /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog to watch what was happening. I'm not sure exactly what commands give you what. I know lsusb gives you some info, but I'm not sure if that's module info and I'm not near my linux machines right now. There's another command I ran that I know told what module it was using (it was a cat of something in /proc) but I can't remember exactly what it was.

though if you just wanted to check to see if your module was using gspca lsmod | grep gspca would return something if it is and nothing if not.
