Post subject:  Chaintech AV710 analog works but no toslink

Hi I have a Maddog Multimedia soundcard based off the envy chipset that is detected as the same as a chaintech av710.

In alsamixer
Card: Chaintech AV-710 │
│ Chip: ICEnsemble VT1616i │
│ View: [Playback] Capture All │
│ Item: Master [dB gain=0.00, 0.00]

The card is working for analog right now. However I want to route all analog
and digital over the optical connection.

I used to do this with my HDTV DirectTV box with my reciever with no issues.

So reading through the guides and the wiki its says this should work out of the box. I just need to modify the general settings for sound. I also went into alsamixer and unmuted the entries.

I ASSUMED that to "use" the digital, I go into Setup -> General and specify the device as /dev/adsp. I had in the passthrough section ALSA:iec958:{AES0 0x02} I changed that to default.

I also checked the boxes for AC3 and DTS passthrough.

But I get no sound to the receiver (via SPDIF).

I tried various settings with alsa;spdif but the closest I could get was no analog sound and loud noise (clipping i think its called) on digital ac broadcast.

So doing some checking everything looks to be correct.

root@mythtvslavefrontend:~# cat /proc/asound/pcm
00-01: IEC1724 IEC958 : IEC1724 IEC958 : playback 1 : capture 1
00-00: ICE1724 : ICE1724 : playback 1 : capture 1

Do I need to have a special asound file to get this to work?

Just checking on this. Can anyone help who has a av710 outputting analog and digital sound over the optical connection. Did it work out of the box? If not what steps did you take to get it working. I only care about TV and Videos. Music I have another system for.

I am running R5E0.

I'm running R5F1. Disabled inbuilt sound, changed output device to adsp, enabled passthrough.

Works perfectly.

Hi thanks for the reply. I did the exact same steps but its not working properly. I may have screwed up some settings in alsamixer.

Doing some testing I can see that the optical output of my card is outputting the red light. So its passing something. Looking into my alsamixer settings I have something that may be affecting this.

I have a three sliders for "IEC958" The first (IEC958) and third(IEC958 1) have no volume slider but I can change them to different input or outputs. "H/W in 0 " or IEC958 in L" etc.. I left them both at "PCM OUT".

The one thats odd is the middle. It is labeled as "IEC958 Output" It had a volume slider that was muted originally so I unmuted it but the wierd thing its stay on "00". I can't raise the volume. This could be because its digital but it also might be why I can see the red light but can't hear any sound. 00 is effectively muted right?

Can anyone else raise the output volume slider or is this my problem? If so how do I fix this?

Mike or anyone else can you please just let me know some settings from alsamixer

[code]alsamixer

What are "IEC958" and " IEC958 1" currently set to?

How about "IEC958 0" does that have a volume slider? Is it set to "00"? Can you raise it?

So I keep trying to get this to work.

Doing

root@mythtvslavefrontend:~# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: AV710 [Chaintech AV-710], device 0: ICE1724 [ICE1724]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: AV710 [Chaintech AV-710], device 1: IEC1724 IEC958 [IEC1724 IEC958]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

So that means that my optical out is at device 1.

I have selected /dev/adsp which points by default points to device 1. Also I shouldn't need to use a asound file because adsp is supposed to use OSS for mythtv.

I get analog output fine when I use /dev/dsp so that means the card is working and alsa seems to be configured properly.

I also unmuted the entries in alsamixer and turned everything on.

I could just go in and enable the Intel HD audio by enabling it in BIOS but the whole point of the Chaintech card was that it was supposed to do bitperfect output.

Also is thier away to put alsamixer back to defaults?
