Post subject:  Hauppage PVR500 MCE (KM R5F1)

It looks like I might have strayed a bit from the Dragon spec., as my Hauppage PVR500 did not get autodetected during installation. (I used "ausdragon2" at the install prompt, but they use the Technisat Airstar 2).

Anyway, I went over to http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=PVR500DualTuner and unfortunately the images that show what values to fill into the fields, don't load.

Can someone please post the settings for the PVR500?

$ mythtv-setup > 2. Capture cards > New capture card

Card type: Analogue V4L capture card
Video device: /dev/video0
Probed info: WinTV PVR 500 (unit #1) [ivtv]
VBI device: /dev/vbi0
Audio device: /dev/dsp
Audio sampling rate limit: (None)
Default input: Tuner 1

According to the legible parts of the wiki page, I should make Tuner0 the default input for /dev/video1; However, only the following inputs are available:

Tuner1
S-Video 1
Composite 1
S-Video 2
Composite 2

I think it kind of makes sense, the inputs match the physical sockets.
Anyway, I played around with a few settings, and probably got this part wrong; I then go to Input connections as instructed, and don't understand any of it.

Thanks for reading.

Marco

Your card type is inaccurate. The PVR-500 is a hardware MPEG tuner.

Unless the BlackScreenWatchingTV page on the wiki has been defaced since I check just now, it tells you that a PVR card needs to be set up as an MPEG-2 encoder not a V4L (BTTV) card....

Quote:
If you have a PVR card (Hauppauge PVR-150, PVR-250, PVR-350, PVR-500 or equivalent) select "MPEG-2 Encoder", your first card will be /dev/video0, the next one /dev/video1, and so on. If the page reports an error scanning your card then see the section about unknown/unrecognized tuner type below.

Thank You for your prompt replies. I go $ mythtv-setup > 2. Capture cards > Delete all cards on mythtv, then Add new card (twice)

Card type: MPEG-2 encoder card (PVR-x50, PVR-500)
Video device: /dev/video0
Probed info: WinTV PVR 500 (unit #1) [ivtv]
Default input: Tuner 1

Card type: MPEG-2 encoder card (PVR-x50, PVR-500)
Video device: /dev/video1
Probed info: WinTV PVR 500 (unit #2) [ivtv]
Default input: Tuner 1

Now the wiki says something about having two Tuners, 0 and 1, and having to change video connections... I guess I can forget about that? What are video connections for? How do I use them?

What are Video sources? Does it mean channels? (Seven, SBS, ABC...) or EPG? (ozTiVo)

The PVR500DualTuner page is obsolete. The configuration walk through on the BlackScreenWatchingTV page explains all of this.
    - What a Video Source is
    - How to make (and how not to make) Input Connections (not Video Connections)

Please go and read through it. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenWatchingTV

OK, I have read through http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenWatchingTV. It talks a lot about north american users and zap2it and downloadable program guides.
I have learnt that you should shutdown the backend before starting mythtv-setup, like so:
Exit mythTV, Alt+2, Alt+S, make changes, Alt+3, Alt+M

I set up my EPG through the ozTiVo website, as instructed on this page:

http://better-access.com/movies/epg.htm

Okay, I can log into ozTiVo and see the channels I have selected, and I know that's what KM confusingly calls a 'Video Source'. An 'Input Connection' associates a jack on my capture card with a given Video Source, so:

4. - Input connections -
[ MPEG : /dev/video0 ] (Tuner 1) -> ozTiVo
[ MPEG : /dev/video1 ] (Tuner 1) -> ozTiVo

When I select an input connection, I get the following screen:

- Connect source to input -
Capture device: [MPEG : /dev/video0 ] Input: Tuner 1
Display Name (optional):
Video source: ozTiVo
External channel change command:
Preset tuner to channel:
<Scan for channels> <Fetch channels from listings source>
Starting channel: Please add channels to this source
Input priority: 0

I move to the button marked <Fetch channels from listings source> and press
Enter, but nothing happens. I cannot select 'ABC-Qld' as my Starting channel, for instance. What's wrong?

I figured out that you need to scan for channels. After scanning all the free-to-air SDTV stations for Brisbane, I exit mythtv-setup, restart the backend (Alt+3), # mythfilldatabase

I get some python errors and it doesn't retrieve any channel/scheduling information, cause, you know, that would be just too easy.

Except for the PVR500, my machine uses identical parts to the Australian Dragon 2.0... I really expected it to be easier than this.

Thanks for all the help, I'll take this database stuff to another subforum, it doesn't belong in 'Hardware' anymore.
