I couldn't find much discussion about this on the forum.
Also hope I chose the correct Forum Header.

I am looking to add a couple of UPS backups to my configuration.
I have one on the wife's pc and it provides power for my MBE. But I am wanting to get a separate unit for that MBE.

There are many brands out there, APC, Belkin, BestPower, Ultra etc.

From searching here and elsewhere I see the APC is definitely used and even find that APC seems to be providing Linux drivers.

How about some of the other brands are any of you having success at using others besides APC and having your KM box monitor the UPS, eventually shutting down gracefully if necessary?

Thanks for the feedback.

APC is more or less the gold standard, and the brand that the pros use. Their warranties, damage coverage, product specs, support, ... are all top notch, and their prices aren't unreasonable either.

I use apcupsd with an APC UPS.

My master backend is collocated with my Linux firewall system - so I let the firewall machine control the UPS and then run apcupsd on the MythTV that points to the firewall machine for status. That works *very* well.

I'm really impressed with apcupsd...

Agreed APC UPS units in conjunction with apcupsd package are the easiest to get up and running. I also use a Dynex branded 800VA UPS (Manufactured by CyberPower) and although I've had no issues with it, getting Network UPS Tools (nut) configured was a hassle. Now that I have it configured, I'm double certain before an upgrade that those files get backedup/restored. When buying a UPS, I'd recommend at least a 500VA model for a Knoppmyth box. Also beware of "sealed maintenance free" batteries. There's no easy way to replace one of those down the line if you need to.

I agree that APC is the premium brand. It's all I use at the office. I had a Memorex branded ups fail on me at home. :x The Belkin unit I also have included a linux driver, but I haven't installed it yet.
