Now I know the sticky says to avoid sata drives as bootable drives, but what about sata dvd drives? Not a bootable device, but can you get one running in knoppmyth? I'd love to stick the extra one I have lying around inside my mythbox.

That information is outdated. The latest vesion R5F1 is able to install directly to a SATA drive. I boot off my SATA's all the time now  I would assume that SATA DVD's are good to go.

Yes, most SATA drives and MoBo SATA controllers work most of the time now. We do get an occasional trouble report, but folks still have the occasional odd problems with PATA IDE drive jumpering, cables, controllers, BIOSes, ... too.

Ok, got the drive in the machine, but how do I get knoppmyth to recognize where the drive is? When I try to play a DVD, I get a xine engine error and it quickly dumps me back to the optical disk menu.

I ran xine-check to see if it gave any answers, and it said that it couldn't find a dvd drive. Can someone tell how to find the file path for the drive itself? I think this is more of a newbie linux question, but any help you guys could offer up would be much appreciated, as this is my first real experience with linux.

Thanks again

KnoppMyth won't play encrypted DVDs out of the box. If you live in a country where it is ok, I'd bet you'd be able to install a program to play the DVDs though.
