I have decided to do a fresh reinstall of my Australian Dragon, documenting everything I did after assembling the hardware.
(Descriptions of what happens and what appears on the screen are enclosed in angle brackets, < >.)

The following three points stuck out:

1) Whenever Linux boots, I get the following error:

<PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:20000@50000000 for 0000:01:00.0>

What does it mean? How do I fix it?

2) During first time configuration, I am supposed to get a dialog asking for my oztivo username and password.
I never got that dialog, how do I get it to ask me again?

3) I can't get the EPG to work. There's an XMLTV error:

<Aborting: Config file does not exist: /root/.mythtv/ozTiVo.xmltv
Do you need to run with --config-file or --configure?>

What does it mean?
I tried running myth-setup --configure, but that doesn't work.
What command do I run to create that ozTiVo.xmltv config file?

Mythfilldatabase is supposed to be run as the mythtv user, as running as root tries to access the files under /root/.mythtv, rather than /home/mythtv/.mythtv .

I don't think your "PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6" error is much of a problem as apparently you system is able to detect the PCI devices correctly.
It might be worthwhile adding pci=nommconf to your lilo boot prompt to see if it goes away (this is from my post here).

When I run mythfilldatabase as user mythtv, should the backend be off (Alt + 2) or on (Alt + 3)?
I get errors either way, but I want to report the right kind of errors. ;->

I used nano to look at /etc/lilo.conf, but I'm unsure where to add the line pci=nommconf:

# where your other OS' partition is.
#
# other=/dev/hda4
# label=HURD
# restricted
# alias=3
image=/boot/bzImage.2.4.20.poweroff
label=PowerOff
# End

Where does it go? Your other post mentions an append statement.

yes the pci error is not a problem. it happens to many if not dragons. human and manicmike say not to worry about it and i believe them.

that tuner card is analog correct? ausdragon uses two digital cards. in my experience the ausdragon2 scrip doesnt work correctly with analog cards. well.. at least with my analog cards. the epg script is linked to the tuner cards - so if you delete the two digital tuner cards that are automatically installed with the ausdragon2 scrip - you'll prevent the epg script from running.

the solution is to run the epg script after the initial install. before you do the post install setup, run manicmikes fixepg-au.sh ... i believe as mythtv user. just search the forum for fixepg-au.sh and you'll find two posts.

The backend should be running.
But I would follow Steve's instructions first.

I couldn't get the Airstar tuner card from ANY supplier, but I decided to substitute with the Hauppage PVR500 because a) it had two tuners, and b) "the most common hardware gets the best coverage and community support. For example, the most common capture cards are the PVR-250, PVR-350, HD-3000, and Air2PC." (source: http://www.mysettopbox.tv/KRP.html) I didn't anticipate KnoppMyth to be so exacting in its requirements.

I tried doing a reinstall with a different boot argument:

Boot Dragon with Installation CD-ROM inside.
<KNOPPMYTH with a boot prompt appears>
tv country=au
<Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area at f0000000 is not E820-reserved

Welcome to the KnoppMyth Linux Installation CD!

Scanning for USB/Firewire devices... Done.
Can't find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry.
Dropping you to a (very limited) shell.
Press reset button to quit.

So I have to do a complete reinstall? WIth the ausdragon2 argument?
At what point of the procedure documented in my first post do I insert the # sh fixepg-au.sh statement?
Is the script included in R5F1? Or do I have to type it in? And what about getting Firefox on here?

i bought the ausdragon tuner cards from manicmike .. given mike put the effort into writing an the script, I figured 'd support that by buying from his store. they were no more expensive than other stores anyway... they're a hundredish bucks. you can also import the card from europe if you'd like. i have seen it in shopbot .. but its not right now.

you can use the default boot. i mean just press enter at the boot prompt. (sorry.. im not really linux savy.. so my nouns may be clumsy at times). or any appropriate one for your tv etc. and then run fixepg-au.sh before the post install setup. I'm sure the script-au.sh is included with

just search for manicmikes original post for the details.. it should help but i think that fixepg-au.sh would be included in 5DF1 - so you probably won't have to create it as described in mikes post.

It looks like you don't need to do the PCI=nommconf, as that error message you had previously had is still there.

Hi all,

Sorry for not seeing this earlier.

The pci error is nothing to worry about. Ignore it

The epg setup failed when someone (almost certainly Human) changed the KnoppMyth-run script. The script now detected the Aus machine as one of his, and bypassed my Aus setup :-( I've put in a patch that fixes this, but am not yet sure whether or not Cecil has included it yet.
To run the Aus tweaker manually, do the following:
1. pop up a terminal screen (alt+x)
2. turn the backend off (alt+2)
3. run setup (alt+s)
4. Perform a channel scan, then quit setup
5. in the terminal, type "AusDragonTweaker.sh" and follow it through
6. restart the backend (alt+3)
7. in the terminal, type "mythfilldatabase". If it's successful, you'll get something like "876 programs inserted" (or something like that)
8. Ctrl+d will get rid of the terminal

Bob should now be your uncle ;-)

The Technisat airstar2 tuners are available from www.digitalnow.com.au He is the importer and has loads of them right now. They're $99 each + delivery.

Cheers

Mike

That stupid script set my capture cards back to digital. I thought all capture cards were just block devices to the kernel, like /dev/video0 for the first one, /dev/video1 for the second one etc. Why does an EPG script need to change the capture device, can't it just use the one that's already there?

The capture device I installed is compatible with Linux, I don't see why I shouldn't be able to use it...

Oh, and another thing... this box doesn't have analog sound (lime green stereo plug). Do I have to plug everything into the SP/DIF on the Chaintech? Or is there a way I can enable both at the same time?

I wrote the script to set up the Aus dragon, which has two digital capture cards. If you run it as though it were a Dragon but don't have one, you need to re-set the cards.
I figured that even if you have to do this again, it saves you loads of time in setting up other things. You don't have to use it if you prefer to do all the other tweaks manually. If you come up with a better script, please email me the diff and I'll test it for submission for the next release.

If you have a Chaintech, you should use it. If you have an SP/DIF amp, then enable digital output. The script should detect the card and set it to SP/DIF out. The Chaintech also outputs 7.1 analogue, so you actually do have analogue sound.

Regards

Mike

I was a bit concerned to see this, so I checked my SVN repository to see what could have changed. There was some rearranging in KnoppMyth-run, but other than the code cleanup I did to make your $IS_AUS checks actually work (they had to be in double quotes) I didn't see any logic changes. Your patch uses syntactic sugar and changes the order of the logic, but it should not have made a difference.

Are you sure it isn't some other underlying cause, like $IS_AUS not being set to begin with?

Hi Human,

I found it was detecting my hardware better after the F1 release, and put it down to your great hardware detection. Whether or not it due to your h/w detection, I'm not assigning responsibility in any way or blaming anyone, other than myself for not making my contribution more sturdy.

The h/w detection must therefore have been kernel based, probably now supporting the variants we use in Australia.

I appreciate the good work we all do, but get annoyed at my own flaws, nothing else. I've submitted a patch anyway, and will attempt an install tonight to see if the Aussie bird will fly again :-)

Regards

Mike

After briefly trying out Ubuntu 7.04, and using the MythTV package distributed with that distro, I have returned to KnoppMyth to try and study those EPG scripts everyone talking about.

I have followed my earlier procedure up to the line that reads '1. General'. I'm a bit confused as to what script I am supposed to run: Is it fixepg-au.sh or AusDragonTweaker.sh?

Should I do the following:

1. pop up a terminal screen (alt+x)
2. turn the backend off (alt+2)
3. run setup (alt+s)
4. Perform a channel scan, then quit setup
5. in the terminal, type "AusDragonTweaker.sh" (or fixepg-au.sh) and follow it through
6. restart the backend (alt+3)
7. in the terminal, type "mythfilldatabase". If it's successful, you'll get something like "876 programs inserted" (or something like that)
8. Ctrl+d will get rid of the terminal

I think since the scripts are so specific, it would be helpful if they were named appropiately, e.g. 'AusDragonTweakerDigital.sh' for the version written by Bob Igo and Mike Williams, and 'AusDragonTweakerAnalog.sh' for the modified version I'm fiddling with now.

Also, how does one implement hardware detection in Linux? A future version of KnoppMyth could pop open a dialog and proclaim: "Congratulations! Your hardware meets KRP specifications.", and have an EPG setup dialog, as part of the procedure that sets the system clock. The user already supplies the country and city in that one, all it needs to ask is which EPG provider they are with, and their username and password for that provider.

Of course that kind of user friendliness may be a long way off, but through collaboration, it should be possible.

What do you think?

The AusDragon is a digital box, so I don't have to specify it :-)
Your modification won't be digital and thus not a dragon, so you shouldn't have to worry about this. You can name your script anything you want.
Again, if you want to write scripts, I encourage it. Human has written substantial hw detection into KnoppMyth-run, so you should have a look at this first.

Your scripts will not be part of the Aus Dragon setup, but you can add them to the distro as part of a more general hardware detection. Fiddle with the KnoppMyth-run script (you'll learn a lot) and see if it works with your mods. This script is run when people install KM, and you can trigger its run with "touch /home/mythtv/configure" then restart X (ctrl-alt-backspace).
I can help you with testing it (to see if it interferes with anyone else's stuff).

Cheers

Mike
