I'm in the process of assembling a Knoppmyth box. I'd like to use two hard drives in a RAID 1 (mirror) configuration. Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about setting it up? |

Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about setting it up? Yes it is possible. Hardware or software RAID? Hardware RAID is (IMO) easiest to setup, but can be expensive. If you opt for hardware RAID make sure you get a true hardware RAID controller - See http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html As far as the OS knows there's just the one drive, the controller handles the RAID.
Google for "Linux RAID" will give you many hits for software RAID. Can be difficult to configure, but is obviously inexpensive - You simply need enough horsepower in your system (CPU, memory) I do not know if KnoppMyth has any scripts to help with a software RAID setup. |

I just went through all this myself. Its not as easy as you might think. hmm... i tried software raid (raid0) with a box that could handle HD, however, it wasn't powerful enough to keep up with the software raid. i couldn't get HD video to stream off it fast enough (lots of hiccups). the real question is: why raid 1? if you interested in backup in case a drive fails, i'm convinced that rsync is the better way to go. just set up a cron job and the 2 drives will sync every day, or every week or whatever. that way you don't get the wear on 2 drives that you would with raid, plus, it's waaaaay easier to setup than software raid. if you need instructions on how to do this, search the forums... there are 2 or 3 great threads that cover this. |

Out of curosity, what was your hardware set up when this happened? I was considering software RAID for a system and was wondering how much "ummmphf" I needed. |

athlon 3200+ with 512mb RAM... just enough for HD, but not enough for RAID and HD. MUCH better performance without software RAID. i'm sure (true) hardware would work like a charm, but i'm not sure it's worth the expense. running 1 disk and backing up to another drive with rsync worked much better. |

hardware Raid is nice I have put in a 3ware card and have a Raid-5 with 6 250GB SATA drives and is great for storing movies. I would agree is more $ but nice. I did have add the 3ware drive in so that it loads at boot time the drive is already there just needs to be put in. I have written some instrustion for someone else on where awhile ago on how to do it. |
