| Post subject: | Upgrade Processor Without Reinstall |
Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade only my processor without reinstalling everything? I recently added a hd tuner and the 1.8 Sempron I currently have isn't handling it very well. The current motherboard can support an Athlon 64x2 so I was hoping to swap out the processor, but I wasn't sure if that was going to require me to reinstall (I'm guess it would). If so I may wait until the next version is out. |

Shouldn't be any problem at all. It even handles things like adding new devices pretty gracefully. Doing a processor swap doesn't really change anything but the speed. |

I recently replaced my Sempron with a faster Athlon. Just boots right up. No reinstall necessary (or recommended). Just be careful pulling the CPU out. Some AMD will have an adhesive thermal pad between the CPU and the fan, instead of thermal grease. If this is the case, you'll have to carefully remove the fan (google for more info) or do like me and wiggle and pull and hope for the best. If you want to reuse the old fan, make sure to buy thermal grease for the new CPU. |
