I just finished the "upgrade" to R5F27 from R5F1 (where everything worked perfectly), and now my PVR-USB2 doesn't work. I have two cards in the system, a KWorld ATSC 110 and the USB2. The ATSC110 works fine, but not the USB2, although the remote does work. I deleted all my existing cards and added the USB2 again, and it shows up just fine on /dev/video1. But when I watch TV on that card, nothing. Black screen, no audio, no on-screen display. The little red light on the USB2 doesn't even turn on. On the other hand, if I cat /dev/video1 > test.mpg, the light turns on and I get a working video file. Any help or hints?

Moral of the story: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Did you make sure you selected the right device in mythtv-setup?

Have you been through the usual diagnostics and troubleshooting steps? http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenWatchingTV

Yep, I tried those steps. The only hint I was able to discover was this line in the mythbackend log:

Code:
MPEGRec(/dev/video1) Error: Could not set MPEG controls 1 through 1.

Searching for that error isn't too helpful. Judging from the source code (one of the search results), it looks like it's having problems setting the parameters for recording-- however, it should be the same (default) parameters I had before the upgrade.

Is udev setting up the /dev/video* devices like you think it is? What does this show?
Code:
ls -al /dev/video*
lsusb

I think udev is working, at least because cat /dev/video1 > test.mpg actually records video. So I think this is somewhere at the myth level. Anyway, the outputs are:
Code:
crw-rw---- 1 root video 81, 0 Sep 27 19:27 /dev/video0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 81, 1 Sep 27 19:27 /dev/video1

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2040:2900 Hauppauge
...

Are you sure which one is which? Check your dmesg log to find out which device is getting assigned to video0 and which to video1. They may have flip-flopped on you. See the R5F27 Hints for more on udev issues.

Well, I give up. For the benefit (or not) of anyone who stumbles upon this post, here's the basics:

1. My setup includes a KWorld ATSC 115 and Hauppauge PVR-USB2. Both got along in R5F1.
2. In R5F27, the PVR-USB2 is recognized as /dev/video1. It queries OK on the card setup screen. But when I watch watch TV or record video, I get nothing but a black screen for about 15 seconds and then it reboots to the main screen. The little red tuner light on the unit does not turn on.
3. The only error message I can find is in the backend log:
Code:
MPEGRec(/dev/video1) Error: Could not set MPEG controls 1 through 1.

4. cat /dev/video1 > test.mpg produces a watchable video, and the tuner light turns on.
5. If I try to scan for channels, it seems to be picking up the right channels, but the tuner light doesn't turn on. If I cat /dev/video1 > test.mpg and leave it on while I scan for channels, the resulting video shows rapidly tuning channels.
6. Backing up and reloading R5F1, everything works fine. Same problem when I reinstall R527.

Because the device and drivers seem to be loaded correctly, it seems that myth is sending bogus initialization/recording parameters to the unit when it tries to record. But I don't know how to debug that, and I've spent to much time messing around already.

Looks like I'm going back to R5F1 until the next release....
