Post subject:  Asus M2NPV-VM R5F27 sound problems (alsa 1.0.13 upgrade)

I have a problem with alsa on R5F27. My board uses snd-intel-hda module. The version of alsa with R5F27 is 1.0.13. I have set all the levels in alsamixer and unmuted all channels (front, rear, center, sub). I can not make speaker-test produce sound from any channels except the front L and front R. From what I can tell, ver. 1.0.14 alsa-driver supports my sound chip much better than 1.0.13.

I downloaded the current version of alsa-driver, alsa-lib, and alsa-utils. 1.0.14, 1.0.14a, 1.0.14 respectively. I ./configure --with-cards=intel-hda for the driver and make and make install. I did the same with the lib and utils. My lib and utils show at ver 1.0.14a and 1.0.14 respectively. My alsa-driver still show at version 1.0.13.

What am I doing wrong? Do I have to recompile the kernel? If so, would someone please guide me through it?

Is this analog or digital audio? Have you checked your wiring? When you run alsamixer do you have Channel set to 6? Have you double checked your settings under Setup>Setup>General (3-4 pages in) > Audio?

I have this board, but only use analog stereo.

Did you reboot after compiling/installing? Actually, reboot is not necessary. You could
Code:
# /etc/init.d/alsa force-reload

I use analog only. I have the channels set to 6. My connections are fine as it works with Ubuntu and Alsa 1.0.14. I have not even looked at the frontend yet. Won't help if I can't get 6 channels from speaker-test and the command line.

Yes. I rebooted. Forced reload after reboot too.

The peeps in the Alsa channel on freenode took a look for me. They told me I need to roll my own kernel. I just need some guidance.

I am currently using the same board with standard audio out (analog) without any problems. I did at one point have to change my audio settings in mythtv to dsp0 from dsp (or vice versa, cant remember at the moment) a couple of upgrades ago.

From tjc's R5F27 Hints:
Quote:
For audio you may have to run alsaconf, and change "/dev/dsp0" to "/dev/dsp" in the setup.

I, too, am running the same motherboard without any upgrades to alsa. Please verify that you have performed the step listed above. The /dev/dsp setting is in the mythtv frontend under utilities & setup.

Maybe I should explain further. This has nothing to do with Mythtv. Mythtv has "/dev/dsp" and not "/dev/dsp0". I have run alsaconf. I DO have 2 channel stereo sound. I do not have any output from center, rear or LFE when doing a speaker-test -c6 from terminal. Again, this has nothing to do with Mythtv.

I suspect that kmkittre and spideyk21 are not using 5.1 , or 7.1 sound.

As far as I know the only way to get true 5.1 or 7.1 sound is via digital audio...

Not true. I was able to do analog 5.1 with R5E50 and an alsa upgrade. I just am having problems upgrading alsa on R5E27.

Also, sorry about the 2 userid's. I mndbndr and bjefferys are both me. bjefferys does not let me log in at work.

Has anybody tried to upgrade alsa in R5E27? Anyone?
