I would like to add a gigabit ethernet card to my existing installation that has a working 10/100 connection now. If I shut down, install the new card, reboot, will it look for new hardware and install drivers?

Thanks for any help

Hi,

You will need, as root, to run netcardconfig --force to set it up.

Search for "jumbo frames" should turn up a couple discussions I was involved in about enabling this to maximize your throughput.

I agree with tjc, if your switch and NICs support it, 4k or 9k jumbo frames may boost your throughput beyond the gigalan upgrade. (Here is that thread tjc was referring to in his post.)

Also, there is an article floating around out there stating that unless your uplink to your cable modem is the standard 1500 byte MTU size, (i.e. not using jumbo frames) your internet connectivity will be mess-up. This is simply not true in my experience. All the systems behind my switch use 4k jumbo frames. The switch talks to my router (which doesn't support jumbo frames) and the router to my cable modem all without any issues.
