Post subject: | Dragon 2.0 needs XvMC for proper Internal player playback? |
I have XvMC enabled on my Myth machine. I occasionally get stutters and lock ups on live TV - especially if I have a recording in process. Sometimes the screen turns pink/green, and the only fix is to exit. If I disable XvMC in the setup screens, playback is even worse and CPU usage (%) spikes to 100%+ Some files that I have ripped also stutter very badly in the Internal player. Xine seems to work fine. #1) Is the only thing I need to do to toggle XvMC is change the setting in Utilities/Setup->Setup->TV Settings->Playback->Preferred MPEG2 Decoder? #2) So, can I rightly surmise that I don't have enough processing horsepower for non-XvMC playback, but enabling XvMC causes me some of my stability issues? If I disable XvMC in the setup screens, playback is even worse and CPU usage (%) spikes to 100%+ The Dragon (Aus version) with E6300 has been tested by me with three capture DVB HD capture cards, 1GB RAM and all three recording in high definition whilst playing a fourth, recorded file. No stutters, or graphical problems at all were encountered. XvMC was not enabled on the machine. My intention was of course to give the machine more work than it would ever be asked to handle and it passed easily and quietly. Unless your US capture cards are higher def (they aren't) the problem you are experiencing is not that the cpu or disk are under-powered. The pre-buffering pause is probably a setting with your card. My Dragon's cards experienced this problem, and the cause is a bug in mythtv, but I've only ever seen it affect DVB. The workaround, in case you want to try the pre-buffer workaround is to: 1. shut down the backend (alt+F2) 2. start up mythtv-setup (alt+s) 3. go into both cards in turn and select the option button on the right (sorry, not at my box ATM) and un-tick the "wait for seq start" option. 4. exit the setup 5. start the backend (alt+f3) This stops the pause error on my systems, and an associated display error. If you try it, tell me if this fixes any of your problems. Regards Mike |

For one, the 1080i channels are interlaced at NTSC rates (60 Hz field rate) rather than PAL (50 Hz field rate). Furthermore, only 2 Aussie networks broadcast what they call 1080i (9 and 10) but it is actually 1440x1080i instead of what the US get which is 1920x1080i. The other netwoks (Seven, ABC and SBS) broadcast 576p on their high def channels and call that "high def".
Edit: After a bit more research it appears that this varies from state to state. |

Post subject: | I will try the fix... |
I will try the fix, but I experience skipping with the Internal player on both recorded streams (watching with a 30-minute delay from the live stream) and a ripped .vob file from a personal DVD. So, I'm skeptical about changes to the capture card configuration helping me here. I can use xine without XVMC enabled, so yes, I suspect that I have some type of configuration issue. I suspect the video card, not my capture card, since I have issues with both recorded, ripped, and live streams. I will try to capture some other logs and re-post this evening when I return home. Thank you! |

Post subject: | nvidia rollback - broken |
In my attempts to "fix" my system, I tried to rollback the driver from 9755 to 9631. I now have no valid nvdia driver on my system, and I'm getting the "respawning" error. I tried running all of the commands at... http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... iversR5F27 ...as root. So, I've taken a step backward. What log files should I be looking in to track down my install of the drivers issue? I've looked in messages and dmesg - not finding anything. |

When I try to follow these directions... http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... diaDrivers the nvidia setup fails when it attempts to build a kernel interface. Have you installed the kernel source or headers? If you don't have the kernel source code, you won't be able to build the module. The last thing you posted didn't have any error messages. Is some of it missing? Mike |

mooseboots, I had a similar problem when trying to install the an alternative video driver. Of course, my system is much older than yours. I have a chaintech 7nif4 with a MX4 GPU. I had to downgrade my video driver to get the video to work. I tried compiling the 96**, but had no luck. The kernal would not compile and the installation would quit. I tried to follow the instructions here: http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... iversR5F27 to roll back my driver to R5F1. Even that did not work. I can't quite remember the error, but had something to do with a glx conflict. In order to fix my problem, I ended up reinstalling R5F27 and then downgrading my video. That worked for me. Remember, you can still backup myth from the command line before you do a reinstall. That is if you go that route. Good Luck! |

Post subject: | No error messages |
The missing error messages are due to the nvidia driver installation launching a GUI. The error messages for not being able to compile into the kernel are there. I thought I had the kernel source and headers - the path referenced in the instructions is a valid path on my machine. I might just re-do my R5F27 installation. |

I have the nvidia driver installed, because I was able to get my system to boot into Myth. This took several instantiations of running the install script and attempting to compile the driver into the linux kernel. At least I'm back to where I was Tuesday night! One error message has me somewhat concerned... 1) An error message "KnoppMyth found no MultiMedia Video Cards!" goes flying by in red text as I boot up. However, right now things seem to be working better with .vob files, although my system is still choking on .mpg files (either LiveTV or stored recordings) when I have XvMC disabled. I think my problems may be xorg.conf related. I've tweaked my xorg.conf file quite a bit - since the default modes from KnoppMyth R5F27 didn't play movies very nicely on my machine... Here's my xorg.conf file - I hope it helps someone else trying to generate an HD xorg.conf file.
