Hi,

I'm trying to setup a diskless frontend. I'm using a case
Morex Cubid 2600 Mini-ITX black
Via Technologies EPIA M10000G, Mini-ITX, 1GHz
Kingston 512MB DDRRAM PC2100

And I have 2 problems...the first one is more know as "Via-Rhine WOL vs PXE Boot" on the net...no pxe boot after warm restart. I was looking into the forum to see soem responses but I didn't find one for Knoppmyth. Some idea?

Then the seocnd one is that after a cold restart my PXE boot is working but after I'm loading the kernel at a cetain moment I have the error:
INIT: Id "c7" respawning too fast:disable for 5 minutes....some hint? is about the X environment? what I can do?

Thanks for help

No thoughts on the first... One the second, you should check /var/log/Xorg.log to see why this is erroring... How did you setup diskless? Odds are, it has the wrong module for your chipset in xorg.conf.

I setup diskless through the new bash script knoppmyth_diskless_frontend.bash for R5E50.

About the Via Epia is strange that we still have this problem after year.I saw that the first time this problem was noticed in 2005. So I will search more on that. Is a strange problem and someone find a solution but is inside the code and I donpt have a lot of skills in re-compiling code. I will let you know if I found a solution for PXE error.

I will look in the afternoon the X log.

Thanks.

The PXE problem is a result of a flawed firmware for the ethernet chipset. There is no BIOS update that will help; you actually have to deconstruct the BIOS, upgrade the ethernet firmware with a newer version, reconstruct the BIOS, and then flash your motherboard. It's a rather tricky process, but it is well documented and I have done it twice myself on EPIA M10000 boards. "Via Rhine WOL vs PXE" should be a good search phrase for your favorite search engine that will point you in the right direction; when I find more appropriate instructions, I will post them.

[EDIT]
This forum thread will give you some direction in updating your BIOS. Again, this is rather dangerous stuff that easily can brick your motherboard if you make a mistake, so do be careful! The links may be dead since the thread is two years old, but you should be able to find everything that is described by doing some simple searches.

Thanks a lot...I'm going to try this.
Another question...this problem is only with EPIA M10000? There also other motherboards like this one at VIA.All of them have this problem?

I just did a search for "cbrom" via my favorite search engine and found it on the first link.

www.biosmods.com

This is not isolated to the M10000 boards, either. It is common to many boards that are using what is essentially alpha-grade code from Intel.

now back to X...how I can configure X when I'm booting through network? my backend is having Nvidia card so the package is configured for that card. I need to configure the embedded Via card.

Now I solved everything...PXE and xorg.conf WORKING....oau...one weekend to do this....but I'm happy.....
Now a question....when I try to go in my frontend to Setup...Media Settings my KNOP is frozen...seems to me that the path is now OK and in some way is frozen....can I set up maybe in text mode the path for finding the music and video?

Any chance you could share your experiences on how you got this working?

Did you have to the the BIOS hack?

Thanks
Victor
