Hey everyone, first off a big thanks to all the developers, I just installed KnoppMyth this weekend and everything went really well.

I am trying to run my InFocus IN72 Projector (Native: 854 x 480 Max: 1024x768 resolution, 31.5 - 80kHz horizontal and 50 - 85Hz vertical) from the S-Video out on my ATI Radeon 9250 (AGP) video card. I was hoping that it would just work, so I shut it down plugged it in and reboot. Everything was good through to the end of the splash screen then the projector display went "garbled". I tried removing all the resolutions in the xorg.conf that I didn't think the projector could handle. But no luck. Maybe I missed one, or is there something else I am missing.

I have been a linux user for about a year and a half, but this is the first time running without a desktop environment. I like it, but it seems there are a lot of simple things I have trouble doing (ie. determine current resolution and settings).

Thanks,
Josh

See the troubleshooting pages on the wiki. Especially the "CheckingLogFiles" page for details on how to increase the verbosity to figure out what the X server is doing.

OK, I finally got a chance to do a little work on the Knoppmyth box tonight. I still can't get the S-video to work past the splash screen and I would really like to get it figured out. I will continue researching this problem and a few others I am having tonight, but so direction would be appreciated. Here is the output of /var/log/dmesg

This makes for a pretty long post, but am unsure how else to post these logs. Thanks, it would be cool if I get to watch a movie tonight on the projector.

The xorg.conf is helpful but where did you get the idea that the dmesg log was appropriate for a problem with TV output under X? You need to go back and look at the /var/log/Xorg.0.log

As the wiki page says:
Quote:
Problem: Your video card isn't working for some reason

Diagnoses: Execute the following command to view the log file and look for any errors. Of particular interest "no valid modes found", "no Xv support available", "could not load module", fatal errors, virtual and actual resolution differ, ...

more /var/log/Xorg.0.log

In much older releases which use the XFree86 server the command will be:

more /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Problem: You need to determine the version of the nVidia video driver installed.

Diagnoses: Execute the following command:

grep -C1 'Module nvidia' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

For much older releases the file to search will be "/var/log/XFree86.0.log" instead of "Xorg.0.log".

Problem: You are having problems setting up HDTV modeilnes in your X configuration

Diagnoses: Increase the verbosity of your X server by changing the command in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc to be:

exec /usr/bin/X11/X -nolisten tcp -logverbose 6

Then restart the server and check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file as described above, which should now tell you why it is rejecting modelines, what the vertical refresh for each modeline is, and all of the details of the EDID modelines that were being reported by the TV.

My first guess would be that you installed without using the "tv" option, got the generic config file, and need to get an appropriate xorg.conf for TV output. For Nvidia I could point you to an appropriate sample config file to try, but ATI is another question. OBTW - S-Video isn't going to get full resolution out of that projector, it will only do NTSC at ~720x480 (640x480) or PAL resolutions.

I was mostly just grasping when I posted my dmseg, it sounded like a good thing to post. Anyway, you are right, I did select the no TV out option, as I used to use a M1-DA to DVI cable to run the projector, but while trying to get it to work with VGA to the monitor, I think I broke the M!-DA input on the projector (maybe just the cable). I accidently unplugged it while it was on. The card still puts out DVI, but the projector won't recognize any DVI source. I was hoping to get buy using S-video and maybe the HDMI on the projector still works. I will test it when I can get the right cablage, or find someone with HDMI source I can test it with. I was hoping there was something I could do other than reinstall to make the S-Video work. Here is the my Xorg.0.log if it helps:
