Post subject:  R5F27 ATI Remote Wonder - Can it work more like a mouse?

I have the ATI Remote and it works well after applying the fixes for R5F27 from the wiki. I have read that the directional circle at the top of the remote should work as a mouse, however it doesn't work a mouse for me. It won't move the cursor. The remote works otherwise on my front end. I tried taking a look at the key assignments and when I press the left direction it shows me "Left", but not mouseleft. I’ve tried reading through the wiki’s, and forums, but I not sure where to start. I see information on .xmodmaps, but I’ve search my machine and I don’t have that file. Can someone guide me in troubleshooting this or telling me where to go read up some more? I’ll post any log files / config files if that will help. TIA.

As far as I can tell, the Dragon kernel mod for the ATI Remote Wonder removes mouse functionality.

Prior to installing the dragon ATI kernel, I had mouse functionality, but some of the buttons on the remote didn't function (with or without an xmodmap - they simply weren't detected as keypresses.)

For me, it ended up being better to lose mouse functionality on the remote but to regain functionality of some of those non-working buttons (i.e., channel +/-, OK, etc.).

Instead, I bought a IR keyboard with a built in mouse, and use it for the rare instances when I need a mouse on my KnoppMyth system.

Ah.. how can you tell? I didn't have mouse functionality before applying the fix. Well, anyway your suggestiong of a wireless keyboard with a mouse is a good one. I'll do that and hopefull at some time the functionality will be restored or I'll just end up using the keyboard with a mouse. Which wireless keyboard / mouse do you use / recommend? Thanks.

If you use these steps, you will have mouse functionality using the older kernel module for the ATI Remote. This removes LIRC (which doesn't include mouse support.)

Code:
/etc/init.d/lirc stop
update-rc.d -f lirc remove
rmmod lirc_atiusb
rmmod lirc_dev
rmmod ati_remote
modprobe ati_remote

cd /lib/modules/2.6.18-chw-13/misc/
mv lirc_dev.ko lirc_dev.ko.no
mv lirc_atiusb.ko lirc_atiusb.ko.no

Unfortunately, not all the buttons will be detected with this module, most notably the OK button at the Channel +/- buttons.

You also need to use a custom modmap to get functionality out of many of the other buttons.

I'm not at home, so I can't give you much info on the keyboard I have, but I'll check when I get home.
