I am having trouble getting my MCE remote control to work.

I have just built my first KM box (actually my first linux box). I have loaded R5F27. I cannot get lirc to recognize my MCE remote. Actually I don't think it even recognizes the transceiver. I have done a lot of research on this forum and others and have come to the conclusion that the problem is that the version of lirc_mceusb2 included in KM is too old and doesn't recognize my IR transceiver.

lsusb -v returns:

    ...
    Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1784:0006
    idVendor 0x1784
    idProduct 0x0006
    iManufacturer 1 TopSpeed Technology Corp.
    iProduct 2 eHome Infrared Transceiver
    iSerial 3 TS002xlt
    ...

It appears that support for this device was added to lirc_mceusb2 in Revision 1.32. (I found that on sourceforge.net.) As far as I can figure out this release of KM includes lirc_mceusb2 revision 1.25. (As determined by strings lirc_mceusb2.ko)

It looks like I need a newer version of lirc_mceusb2 to support my IR transceiver. Does anyone have a new version that I could just copy in place? Do I need to build one? Can I load the required packages and build a new one without breaking anything else? Should I remove the current lirc first?

I am new to Linux but I have extensive experience with SCO Unix, Xenix, AIX, etc. I learn fast if someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

rick

You need to download the latest code and compile the driver yourself. I briefly read this and I think it will help you:

As do I, you have my sympathies

Sorry I can't help you with your MCE remote, just wanted to acknowledge the only post I've seen here to mention SCO...

Hi,

Noticed you have an eHome (usb ir receiver) disconnect it, reboot and then re-run lirc setup script. I think the mce -new is the one you are looking for. Then plug the usb receiver in and do one reboot.

I have a friend that uses it and no recompile of any thing. Stock R5F27 install

Bob - thanks, that's what I'll try to do.

Mike - I tried that after reading a post here. Didn't work for me. It seems that the driver module checks for specific product:device IDs. There are several for eHome and mine wasn't on the list until Rev 1.32. I thought about using a byte editor to patch it in but a recompile seemed like the best idea since it is supported in the latest code. Need to learn how to do this eventually anyway. :)

Slow - thanks for your kind thoughts.

To all - Thanks,

I recompiled the latest LIRC package 0.8.3 as per the instructions in the link Bob gave me. My remote now works! :)

The only problem was that configure.sh didn't exist so I made one based on the the options shown there. (And I'm more at home with vi than nano.) I had to add the line '--with-device=mceusb2" as well. Then reboot and plug in my device. I reran lirc-reconfig.sh and restarted MythTV and voila!

Again, thanks for the help.

Rick
