Post subject:  The end of i586?

Should KnoppMyth end support for i586 class processors and support i686 on up as the basis of future releases (beginning with R6)?

What i586 means can be found here.

Nice link. :)

I voted yes, as I don't have that hardware. But I was also wondering what a i586 might be able to do in a KM setup?

Generally SDTV only and usually requiring some kind of hardware assist for encoding and/or decoding for that.

I voted 'Yes,' since I believe that no one could/should be running KM on Pentium I hardware or lower.

I've seen a few posts about folks running MBE's on Pentium II systems, and even a PentiumPro fits into the i686 family.

Ending i586 support also would mean not supporting some of the older EPIA boards (e.g. the various M series). If I am reading correctly, only the Via C3 Eden CPUs are not fully i686 compatible; the C3 Nehemiah plus the new C7 CPUs should support i686 code.

Based on Akulcsar's statement, I'll take back my above comment.

I thought the EPIA boards were Pentium 3, compatible??? Imagine that.

If it weren't for those boards, I wouldn't have started down the myth path. It's too bad they still aren't ready for HD. That's why I never purchased one.

For good or bad, the future is HD. I can't see older i586 processors handling the load. There comes a point when the old girl just isn't up to the task and you have to find something else she can do -- like being a firewall or ZoneMinder box.

I voted "Yes", only because my oldest PC is an athlon based machine.

I think the darkening (or at least dimmimg) of analog is a great opportunity to "up the ante" as it were. I think HD would benefit from the "better" CPU compiler option.

My box is an Athlon Dual-core (x86_64), but it's running code for a Pentium.

I voted "no", because in my opinion old hardware should be put to good use instead of throwing it into trash.

But the vote was cast hastily, without further knowledge. What are the downsides? If R6 doesn't support i586 anymore, what do we gain? Or vice verca, if the support continues, what do we have to give up then?

While I own two boxes with EPIA MII boards, I would not be terribly surprised if I am in a small minority of folks looking to continue to use these boxes as frontends. In my mind, these boards would be the ONLY reason to continue to support i586 - and it seems that this is a very small group to target. If I am mistaken, I would love to hear otherwise.

Certainly, I am inclined to agree with Liv2Cod's remark that "the future is HD." However, now and even in the relatively near future, Digital TV and HDTV are not equivalent, and a fair majority of the programming that I view is available only on SDTV channels. It would be a waste of bandwidth to encode SDTV channels at HDTV rates, and I have no intention of doing so. To me, SDTV boxes and encoders still have a place - though their end of useful life probably is on the horizon.

Unless I otherwise state so, i586 stays.

I also vote to allow i586 to continue as long as it does not
actually keep features out of KM for some technical reason.

FE only, BE only, with hardware assist. Old FE laptops with
Wifi.

Now a runtime auto-detect to use a CPU dependant algorithm
for small pieces of code that get used a LOT (something like
FFT's) might be a good compromise...
