There's a new feature in MythTV 0.21. Namely the Multirec, which allows one to record multiple channels from one DVB multiplex. A great feature, but one which might be a reason for disappointments.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it so that the multirec can't work on full-featured capture cards? Those rip the selected channel from the multiplex with card's hardware. For one to use the multirec feature, one needs the whole multiplex, from which the channels are then ripped of programmatically. Thus one would need a budget-scale capture card, right?

Or is there a way to get the entire transport stream from the full-featured card?

I believe that is exactly what happens. I'm not sure what value-added feature the cards are adding, other than as you say possibly demuxing the stream in hardware.

As far as I know, not many people use the extra features of the full-featured cards these days. They were designed for the era of the Pentium 2, when the computer didn't have enough horsepower to decode an MPEG2 stream.

There is never any ripping involved. The card gets the MPEG2 data, and MythTV saves it to disk. As long as your drivers support the card fully*, you can get the full DVB stream.

(*) there are one or two that do not support that mode yet - they only allow filtering of the PES. If you are in that boat, I would throw it away and get a new one.

I was hoping to find this too. I searched around and have yet to find anything definitive. I was hoping my new HVR-1600 might work for this, but I am not sure.
