Hi everybody:

When I try to play a DVD using XINE (which comes allready intalled with le latest knoppmyth) all I get is a flashing windows titled:

"xine engine error"

I've been reading some post saying that it has to do with permissions, and with XINE not properly identifying which device on the computer is the DVD drive.

I have a main PATA PRIMARY MASTER hard drive with the DVD rom atached to it as a slave, and then I have a secondary SATA drive which I plan to use later to store videos.

NONE of the applications running under MYTHTV have absolutely any problems identifying the DVD, it even lets me play music CDs just fine, the problem is with XINE.

Can anybody help me with this?

Do DVDs play if you switch to the "Internal" player? (Note that's a capital I) If not, I'm guessing CSS is your problem - See http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... neDVDHowTo

HI:

1) No, that not all it says, the message flashes extremely fast and its really hard to read what it says, I will try to see it when I get home today.

2) I do not know how to switch to another player, I am using the one that comes default with Knoppmyth. I will check on the CSS thing.

That's in Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> Media Settings -> DVD Settings -> Play Settings. I thought the default player in R5F27 was Internal (unless installed as an upgrade).

If you have never played DVDs within Myth before, my money is on this being the problem.

I installed this box from scratch and XINE is the default... it is definitely not the css thing, I've allready checked on that over and over again... this is what the message says...

- XINE ENGINE ERROR -
there is no input plugin available to handle 'dvd:/'.
maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist.

After another one comes up saying:

The source can't be read
Maybe you do not have enough rights for this, or source doesn't
contain data (e.g. no disk in drive) (/dev/dvd)

What does
Code:
ls -l /dev/hd* /dev/dvd* /dev/cdrom*
report? /dev/dvd, /dev/dvdrw (if you have one) and /dev/cdrom should all be links to the same device.

And what is your DVD device set to (also under DVD Settings)?

Keep in mind that if you installed pineapple ("the CSS thing") into the wrong directory you would see the exact same error message. /usr/lib is where Xine is looking for it by default...

How can I check this? It basically plays some DVD and some does not.

Searching for "pineapple" will result in a number of hits that should get you going - See http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... =pineapple and http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... =pineapple

Its definitely installed, what I do not know is how to check if it is intalled on the right place and if xine is seeing it or not.

Use the command line to start your DVD. If pineapple is installed correctly you'll see it attempting to read the disc. Perhaps post the output for a DVD that works, and one that doesn't.

In case anyone else has this error...

As I recall, this is the exact message you get if you don't
have a DVD in the drive (or it is dirty, or setup doesn't point
to the drive that you put the DVD in).

You seem to be saying that you have installed the system from the CD but do not actually say that you installed the forbidden fruit.

Allow me put this clearly: If you don't install a piece of software which will decrypt a scrambled DVD, you will never, ever be able to play it on your Knoppmyth box. This is not included in the distro because is is currently illegal to play a commercial DVD in at least the US and Australia (even if you own it) unless someone has paid yet another additional licensing fee for the hardware. This "library that may not be named" is illegal to allow corporations to extort more money from consumers than is fair and reasonable.
Please don't mention the library's name on this forum. I am also not suggesting that you install this library, unless it is legal to do so in your country.

You haven't actually said anywhere that you have installed this package. Installation is trivial, but you would certainly remember doing it.

So have you done it? Have you installed the extra library not included in the Knoppmyth install CD?

If you have, play your DVD like this to see the errors:
1. Alt+x to start an xterm
2. Type xine -V xv -ph dvd://

Now, read the error messages printed on the xterm and post them here.

If you have not, installing software is like this:
1. Alt+x to start an xterm
2. apt-cache search <search string> (to find the software)
3. su - (enter root password here)
4. apt-get install <software-name>

Mike

I googled for this and found that it's most likely either a region set problem, a pineapple version problem (i.e. you should have used the package, not source), or a combination of the two.
