Post subject:  Installing USB Wifi
First off, I am a total and complete novice to all things Linux, so please be patient with me :D

I'm setting up my KnoppMyth box and I bought a Trendnet TEW-424UB USB Wireless adapter. Now I should have known that this was not fully supported, but I guess if I want to become a Linux user I should get used to that right?

I found this page that offers some driver suggestions (lsusb tells me it does have a Realtek chipset):

And I guess NDISwrapper helps too, but I really have no idea how to even install and run something like this. I wouldn't even know how to install a driver if I did in fact have the right one in my hands.

Also, when I try to access certain files (e.g. most .conf files) in XTerm, it tells me that my permission is denied. I guess I'm somehow signed in as the wrong user, but I don't even know how to change that.

Maybe I'm in over my head, but I feel like if I can just get the ball rolling on this, I'll build some momentum.

Hey, we all start somewhere :) Actually you probably got lucky coming to Cecil's KM forum as I find most of the folks here are quite nice, yes, even to nooobees.

I have been meaning to fire up the wireless in my laptop but just never got around to doing it. Maybe we can both learn something.

I just got this link yesterday, didn't watch the movie but reading the transcript seems to fit the situation nicely.

If you have the patience to stick with us, eventually you will get a final answer. As for the permissions error, when you make changes to the system you will need root power. $ su - will allow you to switch to the user root and get a new prompt of # Make a note that if you are going to need the gui as root, then just use $ su (no -)

Thanks mjl.

That video was actually very helpful at getting my drivers installed and usb wifi working, apparently.

Now I just can't connect to the internet. I run iwlist s and see that there are unencrypted networks available. I downloaded getwifi and run it, but when it tries to connect to those networks, it always says, "not high enough" I probably don't have it configured correctly, but the documentation is pretty weak on exactly how to change the configuration file.

Edit: I meant to throw this question out to all as well:
You do need internet access in order to get updated TV listings and thus to record shows, right?

If you add the channels in the setup, you should be able to manually schedule stuff for record, just won't have a tv list unless you buy the book.

Not sure what the high enough message means. New getting into wireless with KM myself.

I did finally get connected. Looks like "not high enough" just meant that the available signal wasn't strong enough. I moved my box out from the testing room up next to the TV and got it to connect just fine.

I just did a quick search for available networks using "iwlist wlan0 s" and then, since the available network was open and didn't require a key, I just ran "dhclient wlan0" and it connected for me automatically.

Now I'm grabbing TV listings from SchedulesDirect as we speak.

That is awesome! Wish the days were a bit longer so I could follow your path on my laptop (Dell 610) Between the kids & wife and the "honey do" list...
