You are exactly correct. The SD is just contingency.

Remember that you can plug a computer monitor into the VGA or DVI ports, which is probably all the contingency you need - plus it can be handy for initial setup. I wouldn't use SD outputs as a requirement in my selection criteria, that's all.

I have a Samsung LN46A750 and I don't see anything about "pixel mapping" or "1:1" (I assume that is what I look for)?

It looks like Samsung calls 1:1 pixel mapping "Just Scan" (p. 26 of the user manual). This feature is available for the HDMI input, so you should have no problems with your TV.

s1148625, you are wonderful for searching for that. I never would guessed that "Just Scan" is the same thing.

Good point. Thanks for that.

In that case, I'm leaning towards the ATI 2400.

I'm leaning towards the least expensive one. It's only 64bit vs 128bit, but that's probably not a big deal. The only other thing is that I'm not sure about Linux compatibility. I don't see much in the forums.

HDMI
DVI
VGA

There aren't nearly as many successful HDTV systems using ATI. Most are nVidia. nVidia 6200 is probably the most popular chip. I see that the Dragon 2.0 is available with the 6200, 7300, and 7600. I wouldn't stray from that list.

No HDMI with any of those.

Someone linked to this gizmo over in the HDMI thread:

Given this I'd really recommend this and a nvidia card and your motherboard's optical out. You will have a much easier time of setup and configuration by doing this than by going with an ATI card.

Then you're faced with the choice between a little converter (DVI-HDMI) or doing something that may turn out to be really, really hard. I don't mean to rain on your party, but your pre-concieved notions of how you'd like to build this, are likely to screw you. I think you'd be much better off by building a system that's known to work, instead of building the one you want, and then trying to make it work. Just my 0.02.

Particularly since this is his first MythTV box.
