Post subject:  AV710 optical out...

Just did a fresh install of 5.5
I onboard sound was working with
Code:
Audio output device: ALSA: default

Passthrough output device: Default

Max Audio Channels: Stereo   Upmix: Active Linear

o Enable AC3 to SPDIF passthrough   o Aggressive Sound card Buffering
o Enable DTS to SPDIF passthrough   x Use internal volume controls

Mixer Device: ALSA:default   Mixer Controls: PCM

o Independent Muting of Left and Right Audio Channels

I have tried various different settings. Currently on

Code:
Audio output device: ALSA:spdif

Passthrough output device: Default

Max Audio Channels: 5.1      Upmix: Active Linear

x Enable AC3 to SPDIF passthrough   o Aggressive Sound card Buffering
x Enable DTS to SPDIF passthrough   x Use internal volume controls

Mixer Device: ALSA:default   Mixer Controls: PCM

o Independent Muting of Left and Right Audio Channels

Nothing from the Optical out.
I ran alsaconf. Still no luck.
I'm pretty sure the iec958 is unmuted in alsamixer as well.

What settings should I be using ?

aplay -l output

Code:
card 0: AV710 [Chaintech AV-710], device 0: ICE1724 [ICE1724]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0:  subdevice #0:
card 0: AV710 [Chaintech AV-710], device 1: ICE1724 IEC958 [ICE1724 IEC958]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0:  subdevice #0:

It used to have the onboard stuff, but I think alsaconf removed them

Finally! Of course, right after a post too :?

Code:
Audio output device: /dev/adsp

Passthrough output device: Default

Max Audio Channels: stereo      Upmix: Active Linear

x Enable AC3 to SPDIF passthrough   o Aggressive Sound card Buffering
x Enable DTS to SPDIF passthrough   x Use internal volume controls

Mixer Device: ALSA:default   Mixer Controls: PCM

o Independent Muting of Left and Right Audio Channels

The only thing that's not quite right I guess is the Max Audio Channels has to be stereo, not 5.1?

Hmm, no sound playing DVDs? Or anything but TV from what I can see.

I'm in the same boat with the av710. I found after running
Code:
twk_audio.pl --implement digital
it would work with myth set to ALSA:default. recordings would work with myth set to dev/adsp, but I wouldn't get sound in videos that way. Also, I haven't figured out how to get passthrough working for DD in videos.

rather than start a new thread since I think this one is related to my problem...

I used the above code to get sound working on my AV710 using optical, but now xine doesn't passthrough DD or DTS. I noticed in the xine settings that it was set to mono sound, so I switched it to passthrough, which is what worked before. Now it says the device is in use whenever I try to watch something with a DD soundtrack. I've tried switching out for my old asound.conf, but the result is the same. Any ideas

I had the same problem- it lies somewhere in the /home/mythtv/.xine/config file since R5.5 is set up to use xine as the default optical disk player.

I ditched xine, and found the DVD menu support on the Internal player to be sufficient, so I changed the default player to Internal.

I have to wonder if the asound.conf might be somewhat related, since that has traditionally been at the center of things. Although the fact that my old (previously working) one doesn't seem to help casts some doubt on that. Does anyone with R5.5 have xine working with DD passthrough?

For those using xine for dvd playback, I had to change the passthrough device in xine settings to plug:iec958 in order for it to pass through ac3 and not give ma a device busy error.

Thanks. I'll try this. Could you post your asound.conf file?

I'm using the one in this post:
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=556

which I'm finding appears many places on the internet. I have not tried combining my solution with the much simpler asound.conf that was the default in 5.5, but my experience with previous versions is that the defualt ones generate device busy errors.

to follow up again, I had some problems with video freezing when watching avi's with DD sound. I fixed it by changing the passthrough device in xine to "default" rather than "plug:iec958" (which I assume sets some extra settings through my asound.conf, just a guess).
